Personally I favor not just the turkey as the national symbol, but the hokie, more specifically. For those out of the know, a hokie is a big, tough, male turkey that has been (ahem) gelded, shall we say? Seems like an even more fitting symbol.
Ben Franklin was one unique character; wonder what kind of drugs he was on? Not only did he suggest the turkey as the national symbol, he proposed German as America's national language, thought Swedes were 'swarthy', and was rumored to have frequented the London chapter of the Hellfire Club while an Ambassador in England. Sounds like the forefather of Abbie Hoffman
