2. 'People writing their own laws' is a bad idea.
People where stupid enough to vote for George Bush because they wanted to have a beer with him. Now you want to let the same people decide what the laws should be?

5. California has an initiative process, it works ok.
I wish we could fine tune it though to keep outside forces from introducing crap propositions.

9. From what I have read California has become ungovernable because of all the referenda.

3. How do you think a national referendum on gay marriage would go?
Careful what you wish for.

4. It would go the way the people want it to
You can't stop it from happening because you fear the outcome.

6. perhaps.
Certainly we can. I would think that the tyranny of the majority is not something that progressives would want, as the public sentiment can quite easily be whipped up into a jingoistic ferver. Though, while a constituational challenge could be applied to citizen-written laws, there could potentially be a terrible backlog if anyone were able to introduce legislation.

7. How do you think a national referendum on the war would go?
Careful who you give your power away to.
