This is by the Anti-Defamation League, and it is powerfully done and scary. The way this administration has used wedge issues against all minorities is a scary thing to me. I have a great fear it is working. Most of this video is from FOX, but much from CNN as well.

Here are some of the words that jumped out at me.

We are at war with Mexicao.

Invasion at our borders. The constant use of the words "swarms", "hordes", "invaders"

The dehumanization by the use of fear that they are a threat to us, to our health, and that they are trying to take over our country...coming to "reclaim their land."

Frankly this stunned me. I don't watch Fox News, and I seldom watch CNN. I fear their battle of hate has been won.

From the video website link:

When people acting as "experts" or "commentators" on the immigration debate demonize Latino immigrants, either legal or illegal, as a dangerous threat to American society or as subhuman and inherently inferior, they follow a tragic historical pattern which, time and again, has led to extreme civil rights abuses in American history.

Such labels are used to justify extreme action, sometimes even genocide, since the people using those labels claim that the "larger public interest" is at risk. Further, if a group is widely accepted as "inhuman" or "inferior," it allows the rest of society to suspend its normal standards of right and wrong in judging actions taken against the target group.
Added: January 29, 2008

Someone tried since 2005 to warn us the Republicans were doing this. But no one listened, and I don't hear Democrats speaking up on it.

EDINBURG, Texas — Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean (search) argued on Friday that Republicans will try to make immigrants the "scapegoats" in the next election.

At a rally, Dean garnered the loudest applause when he said Republicans would make immigration a pivotal issue during upcoming elections, as they did gay marriage and affirmative action in previous elections.

"Do you know who the scapegoats are going to be? Immigrants," he said. "In Colorado, the chairman of the Republican Party endorsed Tom Tancredo for re-election. That is morally reprehensible. The governor of California, a supposed moderate Republican, invited the Minutemen to visit California. We do not need vigilante justice."

As I say, the video stunned me. I guess we should be paying more attention to the hate going on around us.

24. It's high time for a class war in this country.
And class crosses all boundaries of race, religion, nationality, etc. :patriot:

All of these pundit-twits are the useful idiots of the Corporate Media; their rhetoric is just more red meat to whip Pavlov's Dopes into a frenzy and get them to the polls. Let's all be sure to turn out on election day to hate the Brown People...

This is the "Gay Marriage" issue recycled for 2008.

And you are correct: It IS disgusting.

3. One Democrat IS speaking out loudly against this!
Vickie Butcher, an African-American Democrat running to replace Duncan Hunter in Congress (an open seat, with Hunter retiring). She is running in San Diego's East County, where hate crimes are on the rise including a recent cross burning and beating by racist skinheads of a black Marine who suffered brain damage.

Vickie organized an event in our district on Martin Luther King Day at which she spoke out against hate radio and hate TV, decried the rise in hate crimes nationwide and in our district. Vickie's grandfather was lynched. As a teen, she was inspired after hearing Martin Luther King and successfully challenged segregation at a diner. She fought for Civil Rights and Voting Rights, and she's been fighting for what's right ever since, with a lifetime in public service, most recently winning a United Nations award for service on a peacmaking panel and a humanitarian award from the NAACP for organizing a nonprofit group that brought clean water and medicines to poor people in 15 African nations.

Please consider a donation to her campaign so that we can help a very deserving person win her primary race: www.votevickiebutcher.com.

17. What are her chances? Does she already have a lock on the Dem primary?
I encourage you to post about her on a regular basis and/or help her get nominated as a DFA candidate or PDA candidate so she will attract donations from across the nation.

In the last cycle - 2006 - I donated to candidates in Texas, Alaska, Montana, Virginia, California, Ohio...

She sounds like someone I would like to support - I would like to know more and hear about how her campaign is going over time.

Thanks!

31. She faces a tough primary battle.
There are 4 Democrats running. One is a perennial candidate with no significant funding or even a website. The other two are both ex-military officers. The strongest contender is a former Navy Seal who served as the Pentagon's liaison to Congress.

We have a poll by Barack Obama's pollster showing that if voters are simply given basic biographical info on the candidates, Vickie wins the primary race by a large margin and would also win the general election against her most likely Republican opponent (Duncan Hunter's son) by 1%. That poll was done before she entered the race, when she had very little name recognition. Clearly, if we can get her information to voters, we WILL win. Moreover, many Republicans are not happy about Duncan Jr, who has no experience other than being a soldier in Afghanistan. We've talked to many who are willing to support Vickie if she wins her primary. She can attract votes among women, minorities, and small businesspeople who are willing to place their trust in her, as well as anyone who values ethics in government (she's endorsed by the chair of the House ethics committee).

Vickie is mounting as vigorous a campaign possible with the limited funds received thus far. We are hoping for an infusion of donations from sources such as the National Women's Political Caucus, PDA, and/or the Black Caucus.
We are applying for endorsements from these and other groups. Unfortunately Vickie entered the race late and didn't have enough time to rack up enough votes to make the DFA All-Star finalist list, though many prominent DFA members locally support her.

She has a massive list of supporters, based on the many leadership positions she has held in government, civic organizations and an international nonprofit organization. Vickie is calling people several hours daily to raise money and support -- but needs more! We have a translator on staff who has translated our brochure into Spanish and helped Vickie get interviewed on Latino radio stations. We have a former anchorman who will donate services for voiceover on radio ads, once we raise a little bit more cash. We have an army of people willing to walk precincts. We are registering new voters; over the weekend we registered 32, of whom 28 were Democrats, 1 Republican, and the rest were decline to states. We are out in public places meeting and greeting as many people as we can. And Vickie is speaking anywhere and everywhere. There will be at least 2 debates coming up among the candidates, possibly 3.

If we can raise more cash, we will do mailings to as many precincts as possible. There are 1,200 precincts in this massive district! Every $100 donation allows us to reach Democrats in at least 1 precinct. A max $2300 donation will reach 23 precincts or more.

Our hope is that voters who want a military man will split their vote between the two on the ballot with that background, and Vickie will win. Like Barack Obama, she has the positive message, diversity and charisma to win votes across the aisle WITHOUT compromising Democratic principals!

If anyone here knows any individual or group we should contact, please IM me or send an email to media@votevickiebutcher.com.

36. I'll think about this. I have a friend who is running for U.S. Congress from my
district and she was able to get an invitation to live blog at FireDogLake -- sort of a "meet the progressive candidate online event" -- and she raised $2,400 in an hour. You might want to contact people like Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake (I hope I have the correct name) and see if you can get Vickie a live blog appointment. A chance to replace Duncan Hunter with a real progressive would attract some attention I hope. Also Sam Seder and Thom Hartmann are the Air America hosts who most often have interviews with "up and coming progressive candidates" -- they are able to raise money and gain the status of having been interviewed on a national radio show at the same time. I would try calling the shows and asking to talk to the producers and see if you can get Vickie on.

51. Vickie Butcher can fund raise with BlueAmerica.com
I second the suggestion to have Vickie Butcher contact Jane Hamsher of www.FireDogLake.com to inquire about holding a live blogging interview discussion thread with Vicki Butcher about her candidacy. The money they raise for progressive candidates is done through an affiliation to http://blueamerica.firedoglake.com/ and http://www.BlueAmerica.com . You, yourself, could probably set up a fund raising page for Vickie Bucher at BlueAmerica. Or she could set one up.

Incidentally, Vickie used to be a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing at the California School for the Deaf. When she spoke at the Disabilities Caucus at the California Democratic Party's e-board meeting recently, she delivered her speech in sign language. She will be a strong advocate for the disabled in Congress.

18. Well that is an interesting story
I opened a new photobucket account and used it to post these pictures of my friend's signs welcoming Bush who was here on Friday:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=2811542&mesg_id=2811542

I also put our mm march pictures on that photobucket account. And a day later I got an email from photobucket saying I had used up all my alloted space - for 22 pictures. So I went to that photobucket account and all my pictures were still there - except these two of my friend's signs. They were GONE. No sign they had ever been there. hmmmm

So I just uploaded them again into another photobucket account I have and started a new thread here since the pics were not showing anymore on my original thread. And I moved my mm pics to flickr.

The interesting thing is I have over 1000 pics on my other photobucket account. And I have never received any emails from photobucket saying I was using too much space.

Anyway, glad you like our march pics. It was really awesome. We outnumbered the mm two to one. When we first got there, we had 400 in our march and there were 4 mm standing there to welcome us. That was friggin awesome. One of the mm got on a bullhorn and started yelling at us asking to see our green cards. But our bullhorn guy immediately got us started on "GO HOME MINUTEMEN" and we won the bullhorn/loudness battle. We had a blast.

12. There are great links from that PFAW site.
Here is one about Lou Dobbs.

http://www.wecanstopthehate.org/site/page/journalists_as_anti_immigrant_activists

"He has stated that he believes that "illegal aliens are criminals." (Lou Dobbs Tonight transcript, 4/6/05). Illegal immigrants are not considered criminals under current U.S. law.

He has used the term "anchor babies" to refer to the U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants, suggesting inaccurately that having a U.S. citizen child is a means of acquiring legal immigration status or being protected from deportation. (Lou Dobbs Tonight transcript, 3/31/05).
He refers frequently to illegal aliens from Mexico into the United States as the "invasion" and as an "army of invaders" (Lou Dobbs Tonight transcript, 3/31/06). One of his reporters referred to a visit from Mexico's then-President Vicente Fox as a "Mexican military incursion."
Dobbs linked illegal aliens to a host of diseases including tuberculosis, malaria, and leprosy. In 2005, a reporter on the show claimed that there had been 7,000 new cases of leprosy in the previous three years, a claim disputed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Lou Dobbs Tonight transcript, 4/14/05). To date, and despite protests to the contrary, Dobbs has never acknowledged the error on his show.
Lou Dobbs Tonight has featured several stories on the "reconquest" of the American Southwest. In one 2005 segment, a map purportedly showing "Aztlan" was provided to the show by the Council of Conservative Citizens, a prominent White supremacist organization (Lou Dobbs Tonight transcript, 5/23/06)."

14. Glenn Beck is an asshole ..no doubt as Lou Dobbs is intense but not a racist, imo
Lou Dobbs has this one issue he never gives up on, but he also has written much condemnation of Bush that goes far beyond immgration concerns. He sees Bush as the war monger he is who also is trampling the constitution. He seems to get angry but I don't think he is wacko like Beck is, and he also invited the lady to his show..the others have not, as far as I know.

I also saw an interview of Dobbs and Ms. Murguia who has accused Lou of these hate statements. I have to say she was not prepared, imo, and she refused to discuss any immigration issues, she said she was there only to talk about hate speech..too bad they could not talk honestly about some of the problems.

"He refers frequently to illegal aliens from Mexico into the United States as the "invasion" and as an "army of invaders" (Lou Dobbs Tonight transcript, 3/31/06). One of his reporters referred to a visit from Mexico's then-President Vicente Fox as a "Mexican military incursion."

So I can't tell if he goes after Bush too. But every time I see even a minute of Lou Dobbs, he is talking about the evils of immigration. Every. Single. Time.

I honestly believe he is just as nasty as Bill O'Reilly. And just as hateful.

Hate speech is the problem. There are not any issues to discuss that are a dire emergency, and nothing can ever be discussed in a climate of fear and hatred.

Without 24 hour a day hate speech there would be no "immigrations issues" on the minds of the public.

19. I can attest to this happening
My father, a good Dem, has bought into this thing about illegal aliens hook, line, and sinker. He constantly sends me crap about it. I've asked him to check Snopes about it, then finally asked him to stop. There's two big ironies to this. One, my Mom and Dad (who are in their 70's and not in good health) let their white, American housekeeper go and hired a Latina, who does a much better job. The other is that my Dad's father, my grandfather, was an immigrant himself - from Romania in the early 1920's. So, WTF is the problem?

I personally don't care, except that you have situations like MS-13 and other scumbags coming north along with the law-abiding ones. I mean, we have enough problems with crime and gangs. Keep THAT stuff on the other side of the border. If they're coming here for honest labor, let 'em in.

I went to the youtube link so I could copy and share it. I do some work for one LA when I am feeling ok. I sent it to several members and also to my pastor. They are working hard to get fair treatment of immigrants.

California has 'sobriety' checks which really means license checks. If you are brown skinned you car was being impounded for 30 days. MOst people couldn't afford to get their cars out. The reason I stated brown skinned was because a white, elderly gentlemen from my church forgot his wallet and had to drive though a check. He was not even given a warning and was just told to make sure he always had a license. What the police didn't know was he is an active member of One LA. We haven't been able to stop the impounding but in one city it is now overnight instead of thirty days. It's not perfect but it's better.

35. There's thinly veiled hatred even here on DU
you can see liberal Democrats frothing at the mouth over LEGAL (NOT ILLEGAL) immigrants. I'm not going to call anyone out but you can see it on any thread that talks about H1-B visas, outsourcing, call centers, etc. They will say hateful comments about accents, trustworthiness, honesty, greed, etc. based solely on ethnicity. They say nasty things about the ones who immigrate here legally (permanently, not on H1 visas) and work in professional jobs like medicine, education, or business. It's sick. To me, there's nothing progressive about it.

We need to fine and jail business that hire ILLEGAL immigrants.

53. Honestly- why do you give a shit?
Your passion on the issue makes it seem as if you think these people are the root of all of our problems.

In reality, the fact that they are here is pretty well insignificant.

So....why the hatred?

40. If they are here illegally - THEY ARE NOT IMMIGRANTS.
They are an illegal invasion force. The reasons they say they are here are irrelevant.

This invasion is as illegal as the US invasion of Iraq.

41. It's sickening to hear that talk at DU.
It makes me fear for my country. It makes me think the hatemongers have won the day.

42. Troll
How does invading and taking over a country using military force, dropping bombs, slaughtering communities, and building permanent bases compare to somebody that crosses a boarder so they can make money to help their family to survive?

43. I can understand where you are coming from...

...but you miss the point of the OP entirely. It is the language we use when describing illegal aliens. Such language sets them "apart from us", making them "the other" and in effect dehumanizing them. Does it make them any less human or less worthy of immigrating here simply because they enter illegally?

Something else to consider: the definition of "immigration"...

From dictionary.com:

immigration

noun
1. migration into a place (especially migration to a country of which you are not a native in order to settle there)
2. the body of immigrants arriving during a specified interval; "the increased immigration strengthened the colony"

Why not categorize illegal aliens as immigrants? Why do you assume an immigrant is only one who goes through services like the INS to get here?

44. What? You nut! Next time you eat a apple, orange, lemon, tomato, or lettuce grown in the U.S. and
not an import it was probably picked by an "illegal." You can't imagine how much our economy and you rely on the cheap labor of illegals who pay state and local taxes every time they buy food for their tables from Wal-Mart, gasoline, etc. The reality seems to be beyond your narrow minded comprehension. They are immigrants even though they are "illegal" or "undocumented" immigrants. No such thing as an "illegal."

50. illegal immigration
I have to confess, I don't like the ADL. Here is why: instead of confronting Pat Buchanan aggressively and pointing out why he is wrong, they talk to us like a special-ed kindergarten teacher. They coo gently in our ear "It's not nice to hate people". Well, guess what: I hate George W. Bush. I hate politicians like John McCain who tried to pass the amnesty bill in secret. I hate the Republicans who want to let Mexicans sneak over the border and work for sub-minimum wage, and then force communities and states pay for their health care and schooling.
I hate Republicans who want to let in so many Mexicans that all our social programs will be swamped. It is not the Mexicans who are to blame; they are just doing what is best for them. It is the corrupt politicians and business people who want cheap Mexican labor and care nothing for their own country.
