41. I cried when I saw a video of
young people going around and knocking on doors at their college to get people to come out and vote for Obama. The hopeful, happy expressions on their faces! And when he won, they were shouting, "We did it!" So wonderful to see how he inspires.

7. Awesome Video
... and exactly how I feel about religion and government.

Spot on!!!!!!!!

I had not seen or heard that from Obama, but I knew in my heart that is how he feels. Now I know with every fiber in my body that he should be the next president.

So, so, so, so, many people take up the gauntlet of religion and believe that they need to mold everyone around them to reflect what they believe. Even though the bible is chuck filled with contradictions people continue to believe that it is divinely inspired ... every word, every period, every comma, inspired by a deity who always was, is, and will always be; who created everything that was, is, and will ever be.

If that's your belief then so be it, but know that in order for you to have the freedom to believe that, in order for you to choose the denomination of the Christian church of which you want to worship, there MUST be freedom of religion. If the government sanctions any one religion, it must choose which denomination ... will it be yours? Even if it is, religion is a collection of people who share a similar faith. Everyone's faith is as individual as they are. Even if your denomination of Christianity were chosen, the beliefs gleaned from that religion and legislated may not perfectly reflect your own.

The only way to preserve freedom of religion is to keep government from sanctioning any one religion ... period.

A non-theist secular government is the only form of government that is open to all religious beliefs ... period.

A secular government is NOT a communist government because it does not kick out religion, it embraces them all, equally ... drawing strength from diversity of color, creed, faith, religion, and morality.

America is NOT a collective. We do not, and should not, aspire to be a hive.

WE are overdue to embrace our differences and draw strength from the different walks of life we come from.

Embrace change, embrace diversity, feel the strength; together we can grab the brass ring if we embrace the ultimate faith ... faith in ourselves.

Kick this video ... and most important, VOTE OBAMA.

Peace.

8. These were AWESOME comments on Religion from Obama
I had never seen this particular speech either on Religion in America by Obama.

IT IS INCREDIBLE to see a candidate who can openly talk about the contradictions of the Christian Right Wing in a way that is intelligent, human, and still respectful of religion or lack of religion. And the lack of fear it shows to take the issue head on! To openly call the US "not just a Christian nation" - while on camera but "a jewish nation, a muslim nation, a Buddist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation for people of no faith at all."

LET ME TELL YOU - IN AMERICAN POLITICS THAT TAKES SPINE. Obama has that inner strength and goodwill in his soul.

I have supported him for many many many months (long before he was a candidate) - but this Video just gets me that much more sure that he is the most transcendental LEADER of my lifetime (a brief 38 years).

And no, it's not the song or the flag I like (tho that's nice) - since i know some DU people will critique this as "trivial" or "playing to peoples hearts" (god, a candidate who can reach our hearts? That could never achieve anything right?)

No... it's the words on religion and politics. Great stuff!!!

42. another point to make about religion, if it comes up--
History has shown that as soon as you institutionalize a religion, it DIES. Take Catholicism in France. The beautiful cathedrals stand almost empty of real parishioners. You cannot force somebody to believe in a certain way.

If he gets the nomination many of Obamas supporters will be shell-shocked by the viscious, racist, bigoted reaction from the republicans. I find it amazing that Democrats still fall for this line of crap after being screwed over again and again and again. You can fool some of the people all of the time, apparently.

38. HUH?
Our system of politics exists to highlight the difference in our society... You are no sooner going to convince a Conservative that a woman has the right to choose then you are going to convince a liberal that she doesn't...

To me politics is kind of like Religion we are free to choose what we believe and we insert ourselves into a political party that best fits our views in each party their are pureists who cannot tolerate dissent... That is exactly what is going on in the Republican party right now..

There are points that we will agree with and points that we will disagree and we will agree to disagree but there will never be complete unity....

Unity of mankind is one thing... Unity in politics is something quite different...

We are also a Jewish nation, and a Muslim nation, and a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of non-believers. And even if we did have only Christians in our midsts, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, who's Christianity would we teach in the schools?"

34. "an anthem to pretentiousness and hypocrisy"
As Elvis Costello said, "wasn't imagine no possession written by a millionaire?"

Costello was correct, but only at the point he said that.

None of the Beatles were born millionaires, they worked their way to that status. They were middle class, born during the bombing of WWII.

The song takes on a whole new meaning when you know the background of the author. His father stopped supporting him and his mother. His mother turned his rearing over to her sister. There's more, and it's easy to find.

39. I know the background of the author. He grew up middle-class with his aunt who adored him
He lived on a farm.

When he wrote it, he was a multi-millionaire. John's estate includes slaughter houses and a diamond mine. Sorry, as much as I admire John as a writer/lyricist, I still think this whole period of his life was filled with pretentiousness AND hypocrisy. Sorry, I just do.

36. I might have missed something but
I mean I'm all for this together we can rhetoric but I mean together we can means to me that we can implement our philosophies, progressive philosophies in government not together we can get steam rolled by ideologue Conservatives.

In our Democracy we are supposed to showcase our political division, we can only try to persuade people that our vision is the correct vision.. We are never going to unite the stubborn and intolerant so.. yes I'm not really hyped up on the platitudes either... need a little more substance before I start swooning....

...none! Unless the *history* of Christianity is taught, right along with the history of Buddhism, Celtic religion, Hinduism... My daughter went to a private school where those histories were taught, but no indoctrination took place.

In the public schools, we should not be teaching anybody's Christianity. Separation of church and state (-operated schools)!

"Imagine" was Kucinich's campaign song in 2004. He did it justice!
