The Pentagon has confirmed that two Russian TU-95 Bear bombers flew over a U.S aircraft carrier on the weekend.

U.S defence officials say the incident occurred in the western Pacific.

Four F-18 fighters jets were launched to intercept the Russian bombers, but not before they had flown across the deck of the USS Nimitz at an altitude of 2,000 feet.

The F-18s escorted the bombers out of the area.

It was the second time since July 2004 that a Russian Bear bomber has been able to get that close to a U.S aircraft carrier.

2. Vladimir's got himself some stealth technology...
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 11:18 PM by Kutjara
...and he wants us to know it. If he can retrofit it to TU-95s, he could potentially stealth the entire airforce. I guess it's back to the drawing board for our AWACS engineers.

For these Russian Bears 2000 ft is pretty much flying over the deck. Bears are something like the the B52's, they fly high, drop their load and wave goodbye. Back in the day we would have them fly over us in the West Pac but never that low.

11. But it is not as if they were buzzing the carrier deck
At 2000 feet, you could say they were "in the area" or "flying a provocative course" or something like that. But saying they flew over the flight deck seems like a gross exaggeration.

6. Gotta say, this is not all that uncommon!
Not to mention the sub on sub action!

Having served at a base called "Top Cover for America," I know a bit about how we deal with these incursions. No one thinks they are attacks, they used to happen every day in the late 70s and early 80s...

Sir, the space station is flying low enough to see that.

Come to think of it, the space station doesn't have any room to talk. :)

Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong
Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast.

16. Remember, it was the arms race
that sunk the Soviet Union. But at least in their case, there was a real enemy (the US) keeping up our half of the race.

With this Bush idiot, we don't have any significant military enemies in the world today, yet he is pissing away over a trillion dollars a year in this build-up. While China is eating our lunch now and Russia is not far behind.
