Interesting that McCain wants to close GTMO and bring the prisoners to the US --

Wonder how that will go over with the Republican voters...

The prisoners are to be housed just outside the Kansas City/Overland Park metropolitan area.

3. If we have legitimate prisoners (LEGITIMATE) and there's a concern about
housing them on US soil, I honestly don't understand why we couldn't re-do GITMO. It's not the facility itself that's the problem, it's US doing what we're doing to them.

Humane living conditions and guards, etc.

Am I being dumb?

4. Re-doing GITMO is something I've never thought about
until I saw your post. I believe you are correct in saying it's US causing the problems at Gitmo, but there has been such a hue and cry about closing the facility that it's now a part of the candidates' to-do list, at least with Obama and McCain. I don't know about Hillary.

If the facility is to be closed, here's what I see as ridiculously unwise: bringing the Gitmo prisoners to Kansas. Because of Gitmo's location, security at Gitmo is more easily able to protect the prisoners from outside attacks or from outsiders wishing to cause harm. This would not be possible were the Gitmo residents moved to the U.S. heartland -- Leavenworth, Kansas -- which affords easy access from many directions. Any individual or group wanting to cause trouble could so easily blend in just a few miles away in the Kansas City/Overland Park metro area.

If Gitmo is to be moved to U.S. soil, there must be a location where security has a better chance of keeping everyone safe. Someplace with natural barriers, perhaps, such as being surrounded by water. Someplace AWAY FROM A MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREA. Not someplace relatively unprotected, smack in the center of our nation.
