if honeybees disappear, you can forget about ice cream. Häagen-Dazs ice cream is made only from natural ingredients, and without honeybees, there would be none

Join the campaign for the Honeybee

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/business/content/business/epaper/2008/02/18/a3bz_pg3honeybees_0218.html

In recognition of the bees' crucial role and their plight under a disturbing malady known as colony collapse disorder, the company is bringing back a classic Häagen-Dazs ice cream flavor, Vanilla Honey Bee. It's expected to be in stores beginning this week.

Also this week, Häagen-Dazs is launching the "Häagen-Dazs loves Honey Bees" campaign, tagging all its honeybee-affected flavors with a bee-striped heart with wings and "hd loves hb" icon. A portion of the proceeds from the bee-labeled flavors will be used to help the insects.

1. Slick.......real slick
Excuse me if I don't get all weepy with the flood of crocodile tears here. This isn't capitalism with a social conscience, it isn't even capitalism in self-preservation mode, it's just slick marketing. Get the public to think that you are really concerned and doing something about a problem that is in the news. Leverage that into getting them to buy your ice cream and tout the fact that "a portion of the proceeds...." is really going to help out.

It would be false advertising if they didn't chip in some money after all the bragging, so they reach in very deep and pull out a quarter mil, knowing very well that it sounds like a lot of money to the average consumer, but in all actuality, it may fund a couple of researchers for a year. Meanwhile, the US government, which funds hundreds of USDA scientists with an annual budget of millions gets to look like the boob left holding the bag while doing nothing. All reinforcing that Reagan line that government IS the problem.

No thanks, Haagen-Dazs, take your slick marketing campaign and go back to New Jersey with your fake Scandinavian sounding name. Let the real scientists who work for government funded land grant colleges solve the problem without your bee-striped hearts.

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 03:36 AM by izquierdista
But tell me, is the advertising budget for this campaign more or less than the amount of money that goes to the bee researchers? And neglected? What are the people at the USDA and land grant colleges doing, shaking the hives and saying "bees no buzz.....wha happen?"

This is a serious problem and I don't know that we can be choosy as to who funds efforts to seek a solution. Do you really think THIS administration--the NON-Science administration is going to kick sufficient money towards this incredibly serious problem? Forget overpriced ice cream, but if that is what it takes to get attention to this issue, welcome aboard, HD.

12. Funding the solution
Yes, I think that there are STILL some people in the government who are still working, the lower levels of the USDA are not filled with Brownie's college fraternity chums. Here's a copy of the USDA action plan for this problem: www.ars.usda.gov/is/br/ccd/ccd_actionplan.pdf Notice that the FY2007 budget is $7.7 million, or about 31 times what Haagen-Dazs is going to kick in. Let me put that in perspective for you, since we both think this is a problem to be solved:

Me: Go USDA!!

You: Go Haagen-Dazs!

Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 08:16 AM by hlthe2b
This is a serious problem and I find it unfathomable that you would imply we should turn away additional funding for the research required and more importantly, perhaps-- a broad based way to increase awareness among the public.... because it comes from Haagen-Dazs.

I'm no corporatist, but geez... cut off your own nose to spite your own face--not that of the rest of society.

28. Where did I say "turn away additional funding"?
I didn't. I just put things in perspective. This quarter million is just chump change to give their sales a boost. Here, take a look at what their REAL promotions cost: http://www.talkingretail.com/products/5268/Hagen-Dazs-rolls-out-Wimbledon.ehtml And that was just in the UK. Something tells me that a corporation that makes 70 million dollars the the UK alone could probably afford to give more than a quarter million to world-wide effort if Like they say, "the bees can't wait".

I'm still waiting for someone to acknowledge that "THIS administration--the NON-Science administration" actually had some people working on the problem before this blessed increased awareness event by HD.

That they haven't been able to cut all funding for all science-based agencies is hardly a point of pride, but go on and defend them. Are you sure you are in the "right" place?

30. Keep on tearing them down.....
Since you know nothing about these people, let me give you some insight on them. There are career scientists who work at the USDA, many government agencies, in fact. Every year they put in their budget requests and try to do some work. It is difficult to be a scientist with a career politician to report to. As we have seen, they will rewrite your reports to suit their political aims, make you spend your budget hiring some crony contractors, etc. But in the end, they get the last word, they have a term for themselves, the "we-bes" as in 'we be here before you came, and we be here after you leave'.

These are the people that have managed to get 7.7 million in budget dollars under the radar to solve the colony collapse phenomenon. If you had even looked at the report, you would have seen that they have been concerned about this long before Haagen-Dazs showed up with their marketing gimmicks. Soon Haagen-Dazs will tire of this marketing stunt, as soon as they look at an unresponsive sales report and they will move on to some other gimmick to pitch their ice cream. Kind of like the way Dubya gets tired of everything he has screwed up and just walks away (TANG, Harken Energy, the Iraq War, etc). Those scientists at the USDA will still be there though, grateful that a quarter million did come their way from Haagen-Dazs, but it will neither make nor break their budget and they will continue on with their work. Kind of like the bees that they are trying to save.

are as disingenuous as most intentional disruptors--which I hope that you are not. YOU however appear very determined to defend the administration.

Career scientists (and I have been one during a part of my working life time) ARE NOT part of the administration.

Be a BUSH* defender, if you like (and as you appear very desperate to do). Your stripes are showing. :eyes:

8. Think "why the hell would anyone rely on a single species for a critical industry?"
That has been a failed model throughout history.

Although there is no evidence that GM crops have anything to do with CCD, GM crops may play a small role. The biggest problem is the ridiculous management by the beekeepers themselves.

7. "$250,000 for research into sustainable pollination." That may not include honey bees.
Relying on a single species for pollination is not sustainable. The $250,000 will be will invested -- there are plenty of pollinators out there.

13. No there are not enough pollenators out there with out the bees. Enlighten yourself.
last year it hit a critical point where commercial bee guys were left with empty hives and fields went with out the help of bees. Yields were down. You might not have noticed empty shelves at the market, but that day might come to bee. Bayer the asprin company has a bug spray out there called Gaucho. It has been banned in France and many other countries. What Bayer claims and has printed on the label is, the bug will become overly infested with parasites and loose their way home. it's what they are noticing with the bees. Problem with Gaucho is that it does not just sit on the plant and kill the bugs, it falls to the ground and is absorbed into the plant then passed on to the bees through the pollen. This will also happen with next years planting, as the stuff is still in the ground the next spring. The proof that there is something that is actually wrong with the pollen is that there are no animals or insects that come after the honey once all the bees have died off. Google "bayer bees" There's a lot written. Einstien said "that with out the bee we would only last 4 years."
