2. Obama is not for Single-payer universal health coverage.
Nothing is going to change with Obama's plan. Obama is too worried about health insurance companies having a seat at the table.

3. I am afraid that many will opt out.
Senator Obama says that people will buy it if it's affordable, but when you consider how many people are willing to go without auto insurance, it makes me wonder if (especially younger and healthier) people won't just take the risk. Then when some of the uninsured do get sick, we'll have the same problems we have now -- the costs to taxpayers of indigent care, bankruptcies as a result of outrageous medical bills, emergency rooms used as a substitute for primary physicians...

I do believe it has to be universal if it's going to work. Dennis was right -- take the premiums through income taxes, then put every American on the plan.

4. If allowed they will Opt Out - - -
Kjaereste,

You are so right, Obama hasn't thought this one through and think he is being influenced by big insurance. The groups at lowest risk will not take the coverage and guess who will pick up the tab, yep, the middle class. If we're going to do it, let's do it right.

5. Kucinich was the only one who supported single-payer, and he's out of the race.
"Universal" health care is off the table. The question to me of which of the two remaining candidates can get something postitive done on health care is pretty clear.

I see any proposal Hillary offers being dubbed "Hillarycare", and Republican legislators voting against it to score points with their base and secure their re-election. I listen to talk radio every day, and I hear the power that word still has with them. They don't even care if it will make their lives better. Their judgment is clouded by hate. I just don't see her being able to make the bipartisan traction she needs to on that issue.

Hillary's plan also has severe problems with the way she implements subsidies for low-income families. I've written about it here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=4595829&mesg_id=4599449

The groups at lowest risk, btw, are those adults under 25, who would be covered under their parents insurance under the Obama plan.

I'm not really happy about either of the remaining plans -- I'm a supporter of HR 676 -- but we're not getting that. I think Obama can at least make some progress that helps people.
