1. Correct me if I'm wrong (again), but isn't the ONLY thing holding this up |
|
the "retroactive immunity" part of the bill?
If I understand it correctly (again, not a given), they can still wiretap us, do whatever they've been doing, as long as they get a warrant.
And why am I thinking that if it's an "urgent" situation where there's no time to get a warrant, they can go ahead and then have three days after beginning surveillance to obtain that warrant?
This -- and the Repubs -- make it sound as though the Dem's position is that no surveillance, no wiretapping, EVER. I don't believe that's the case.
Awaiting your knowledgeable and educational responses. Thanks.

There is nothing to stop them from wiretapping legally. The FISA court has approved the vast majority of requests. They want that retroactive immunity. This has nothing to do with "protecting the American people".
It has to do with not forcing the telecom companies to testify in court about how and why they broke the law. And how much they profited from it through government contracts. Those are the real sticking points.

4. There's that "trial lawyer" bullshit again... |
|
you know, the poor innocent corporations, and the evil greedy trial lawyers out to hurt them.
I'd have a lot more respect for Obama if he hadn't spread that meme.

8. I would add one thing to what Dan Froomkin says |
|
Fear is a great short term motivator.
The rethugs are discovering, as have all tyrants in the past, that eventually the population grows weary of perpetual fear. When that happens, the fear turns to anger. Inevitably, the tyrants try what worked before, piling on more fear, which just angers the population even more, until the masses revolt against their oppressors.
