24. I moved out of the house to keep my Mom from bitching
Going off to college I finally left behind my mum's
complaining. When I saw HC I said "Mom, is that
you?" Wasn't enough that she complained about mailings
that she said were incorrect. She also left her listeners
confused about what exactly was incrrect? Instead of ranting,
I'd appreciate a Power Point presentation that would explain
how Barama's take on HC's health insurance plan is incorrect.
She has some explaining to do. Does she think she's going to
win votes with her raves? Can you imagine what life was like
for Chelsea growing up with that haunting voice?

8. Personally I don't see even a shred of irrationality in this video.
I am frankly quite satisfied that we have two candidates who are campaigning actively, and of course, I have not seen the mailing (The primary is over here, and I didn't vote either for Mrs. Clinton or for Mr. Obama - having chosen to vote for a failed candidate).

But Mrs. Clinton speech here consists entirely of readily verifiable remarks.

She may have improved upon the speech by reading the specific remarks that incited her anger, but anger expressed in this way is an appropriate emotion. I hope that the next President will have the capability of being angry, since a little anger will certainly be called upon in the next administration.

21. Again, the contents of this flyer are readily verifiable.
I am going to vote for the candidate my party selects, and I trust the primary voters who follow to make a wise choice. But it seems to me that how one votes on issues effecting reproductive choice is relevant to the campaign.

If Mr. Obama were to do the same thing as Mrs. Clinton did, holding up this flyer and stating that it is untrue, I would have no problem with that either.

If he did vote "present," and he has a rational explanation for it, that is fine. On the other hand, if he is less than enthusiastic for women's right to choose, that is also fair game.

I personally do not expect either candidate to be perfect by the way.

I have big problems with Obama's approach to energy, for instance, and big problems with Mrs. Clinton's actions on the war in Iraq.

But to my great relief, neither of them are a McCain or Huckabee.

He has the capacity of being angry. Capacity filled to the brim and then some. Foul-mouthed drunken sailor getting into a bar fight angry.

No, this wasn't anger, this was like one of the above posters mentioned. This is why grown children move out and why spouses leave. Can you imagine having to listen to that for more than the 3 minutes or so the clip ran? I haven't had to listen to anything like that since the divorce was final and I'm SURE as hell not going to vote for 4 years of it.

to be false, then tries to turn the tables on him. Shame on you Hillary Clinton.

That's but one example. It's not a pretty term, but there's nothing gender specific about the charge. Or, are you saying you associate shrill with women? That WOULD be sexist.

56. "nothing sexist about it"? oh really? when was the last time you thought
one of your buddies was "shrill and hysterical"
when was the last time you told him you thought that he sounded shrill and hysterical?
did you ever think your dad was shrill and hysterical when he yelled?
or when he didn't yell but just sounded deadly serious-angry? (gee, dad is really shrill and hysterical)

"There are certainly linguistic traps when discussing gender. Never refer to a woman as shrill or hysterical. Even if she is being shrill or hysterical. Those words were regularly used to demean and belittle women. You will be given no benefit of the doubt. You will be labeled a patronizing chauvinist pig.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/18/AR2008011800890_pf.html

"Critics also describe NOW as "shrill" and "hysterical," words that are curiously almost never used to describe men.

57. Neither word really plays into my vocabulary...
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 04:49 AM by casus belli
but as I've pointed out, it isn't uncommon to see the words used to describe men, either. Howard Dean was a good example. I heard both of those terms used ad nauseum after his Iowa speech. I also hear the word shrill used alot to describe talk-radio. I think you're going to take away from this what you want. If you want to see the post as sexist, I'm not going to be able to persuade you otherwise. But I will say that accusing someone of being sexist, who isn't, only diminishes the word and the credibility of the person making the false accusation.

Just because they chose the words shrill or hysterical, that's not evidence in and of itself that the intent was sexist.

60. well, it might not be "evidence in and of itself that the intent was sexist"
but it might be a big clue that the intent *was* sexist. either way, it certainly doesn't make a very good impression on others who may be unaware of what a great, open minded, fair thinking guy someone is while he's using outdated, stereotypical descriptions of females.

I think she had a point about what the campaign does vs. the message the candidate presents. She (and every other candidate) has the same issues with inaccuracies in their flyers.

Why not stop the inaccurate attacks across the board?

Let me clearly state that as an Obama supporter I don't condone inaccurate attacks, and I don't see why objecting to them makes anyone "lose their mind".

51. I think you mean "Hillary Clinton defends herself against Obama's negative attacks"
If Obama is the frontrunner then he should be extra careful about distributing materials that attack his challenger. It's a risky tactic that could backfire at any time.

Hillary is in second place right now and needs to break through on March 4th. If Obama is attacking her with these fliers she has no choice except to defend herself.

Defending yourself is not losing your mind. If you don't defend yourself then it just means that more people will believe the lies - as happened to John Kerry back in 2004.
