Why is he surprised that these are the allegations about Obama...and if they were the standard attacks against Hillary...he should be prepared. I would've charged the stage I swear to you. But I've worked at this studio when I was with CBS, I am very good friends with Bill's make-up lady and would never do that to her. ...that Kingston isn't the only idiot Congressman from Georgia. Hell, even our Democrats are stupid. Agree that Maher was way weak on this. The repeating of the lies about Obama and the hand over the heart - hell, nobody is supposed to put their hand over their heart during the Anthem - it's not in the protocol...the Pledge, yes, but not the Anthem. Just wish that Maher's people had pulled the Kingston interview on The Colbert Report from a couple of years ago - he was the first of the dumbass Congressmen that Colbert featured on his series of 'know your representatives (or something like that)', and there's a good reason for it. The bastard was too stupid to realize he was being ridiculed...he came away the fool and was seemingly proud of it. The only one that topped it was another Georgia Repug - Lynn Westmorland - who, even though he was sponsoring legislation to require the permanent placement of the Ten Commandments at/on government buildings/property, couldn't accurately recite even one of the ten. It wasn't too long after that one that the RNC got the word out that 'R's' shouldn't 'skin their ignorance' on TCR...or was it after he, Colbert, laid 'em low at the Press Corps Dinner. Those fools actually thought Colbert was one of them...the jerks.

Comeon Bill you can do better than that.

The split-second timing of live TV doesn't allow for much research. I think Bill handled it well...he was incredulous at and dismissive of Kingston's comments.

His job as host is to keep the show moving, not busy himself refuting every loony tunes idiocy spouted by the week's token wingers. They do that quite well on their own at making themselves look stupid.

...there's no excuse to not call him on his crap. Period. His only excuse is he had no idea what Kingston was saying - so there was no WAY to call him on his crap. I'll find out more this week.

One, that was intended as a response to dirtydawg, and two, when I posted that, it hadn't connected in my head that the person posting the video and the person IN the video were the same.

Almost every week during Maher Season there will be at least one thread about how Bill didn't come down on some right winger hard enough, or he shouldn't have given so much time to so-and-so, or whatever should have been different in whatever. There is also the "I canceled my HBO the last time he had Ann Coulter on!!" crowd who expect Maher to be a Democratic/Progressive purist and are angy and disappointed when he is not.

I think a lot of people don't get that it is a live show and as such doesn't allow for much flexibility; if something didn't work out, there's no do-overs. And even among live shows, Maher is unique; on HBO they don't get commercial breaks to re-group.

It's a tough gig for a host; I cut Bill a lot of slack.

I only expect him to not let people outright LIE. I'm actually a libertarian and Maher is the man "most like me" when it comes to political/religious views on TV. But someone on that stage should've said something. Stop painting me into some left-wing agenda here. The man threw out a friggin' internet hoax as gospel and no one held him accountable. That has no party affiliation.

I've been in Maher's audience a couple of times. (I'm totally fascinated with watching chaos become a tv show in under a second.) I've always thought Bill does a pretty good job of holding these nutcases up to ridicule by just letting their natural stupidly flow.

Does anyone actually believe that a front-running presidential candidate would refuse to say the pledge? This kind of stuff is so far out it isn't even decent propaganda.

It had that picture, and a little dissertation about how Obama's parents were atheists and Barack was schooled at a madrases (something else which makes less-than-zero sense) so he's a stealthy Muslim who's been working all his life to surreptitiously take over the United States for Islam. Allah akbar!!

The mere fact that someone holding political office would throw that out as if it were true, makes them look dumber than half a bucket of rocks. It reminds of the people who said Kerry deliberately got himself wounded in Vietnam because he knew it would help his political career 30 years later.

Something I wish Bill had brought up--especially with Tom Browkaw--is the media's total focus on the race, the campaign, fund-raising and strategy. There is almost zero analysis of where the candidates stand on the issues; it's all about who's going to win.
