In James Howard Kunstler's view, public spaces should be inspired centers of civic life and the physical manifestation of the common good. Instead, he argues, what we have in America is a nation of places not worth caring about. Reengineering our cities will involve more radical change than we are prepared for, Kunstler believes, but our hand will be forced by earth crises stemming from our national lifestyle. "Life in the mid-21st century," Kunstler says, "is going to be about living locally."

3. give it a recommendation
it's a message that needs to be heard. It will be our nation's number 1 issue sooner than we think.

8. I read Geography of Nowhere in a college course and have been a fan ever since
Kunstler is great. I had the chance to hear him speak last fall and he is surprisingly humorous despite talking about how we are all fucked.

10. Humor is the last refuge
for those who are able to see it how it truly is.

It's why so many comedians suffer from depression, as well as being extremely intelligent: they are able to take off the rose-colored glasses.

7. Did anyone mention this guy is very funny?
I just checked my university library and they have several of his works. I'm making this as a research paper or speech topic for students.

I live in suburbia but I live in the middle of huge area--off the street. My place would make a perfect town center. Think I'll hold on to it. Might be my second career.

9. I live in an appalachian ghetto
but I'm hoping that since Dayton has a HUGE supply of ready water and is on a waterway, that we'll be a port in the future.

Right now though, we're all driving cars all day, but going nowhere.

12. Recomended
This is the kind of thinking we need. My gf talks about how fun Mexico was when she was there for a semester and it's because of a sense of community that Howard was talking about.

13. add color to your meal
to your visual Meal, what claims your visual attention.
Going down Broadway on the bus I see Starbucks next door to the Buzz Saw Steak House, next store to the Brown Bear Car Warsh(sp?), the next block Compass Health. Groan added to groan is the visual scene.
