Post Super Tuesday RollCall: Did your state vote yesterday? |
|
I am in Massachusetts. Sen. Clinton's lead here was as much as 37 points at the beginning of January. I wish the result was closer in MA, but we shaved 21 points off that lead and Sen. Obama will get a lot of delegates here. Also, the City of Boston went for Obama, by just under 10,000 votes.
So, we go on. I am proud of the work we did in Massachusetts, proud of the people who came out to support Sen. Obama and very, very proud of my candidate. Super Tuesday was always going to be tough and we gritted it out, state by hard-fought state. The delegate race is extremely close and, well in brief, we fight on.
So, MA checks in, a little dented, a little weathered, very tired and needing a rest. But I believe. We live to fight another day in very good shape.
GObama!
So, did you have a primary/caucus yesterday? What was it like? Did you get a chance to work on the campaign? What did the voters say? Any good stories? Let us know!

I was in the main office making calls yesterday and it was great to see the endless stream of drop-in volunteers, all ages, all backgrounds, coming in off the street ready to give whatever help was needed. Every time I've been in that place, I've been incredibly impressed by the caliber of the volunteers and the efficiency and good humor of the place.
The volunteers actually attached to the campaign are excellent organizers and uniformly welcoming and solicitous of new workers, but the volunteers from the community are amazing. You hear other people's campaign calls during lulls in your own, and I notice that a large proportion of them can articulate informed explanations of Senator Obama's platform and at the same time offer deeply persuasive reasons for their own personal support. The guy who was sitting a few steps above me in the stairwell where some of us were making calls from our cellphones was so personable and well-spoken that I wouldn't be surprised to be working for his candidacy one day! I told him that, and he informed me practically that he has five years to go before he can even be a candidate for Congress. :-)
Yesterday, there were a lot of young people (maybe in their late teens?) bouncing in to get signs and go out for visibilities in the local area and they were filled with enthusiasm and hope; it was a pleasure to see them out there. And Obama did win Somerville (where the office is) quite handily! I'm as proud of that as I was when we turned NH Blue in 2004.
I would love to see a geographical breakdown of which towns/areas were won by which candidate throughout the state of MA. I have a feeling that HRC won in the more conservative Democratic areas of the state, but I'd like to know if I'm right. For instance, a friend at work told me that she drew a big crowd in Springfield in W. MA recently, and I bet she did well there. If Obama had had more time and money, I bet he could have made more of a showing in those areas, too. He really did make extraordinary gains very quickly in MA and I think we should all be proud of that!

Clinton did NOT tighten the race up. She got creamed here.
I don't see anywhere where Clinton outperformed what were stable polls over the last month. Only Obama surged.
Don't feel bad about Mass. Sleeping on it, I realized Kerry & Kennedy made a big difference after all: 20+ points.
Edited to add: all year long Hillary had a sizeable lead in GA. The surge to Obama here was truly astounding.

3. Wisconsin votes Feb. 19, in two weeks. |
|
And it looks like it will help make a difference this time, since yesterday didn't decide anything for the Dems. I expect we'll go for Obama, because our neighbors, MN, IA, and IL all have. It would be wonderful if our favorite son Russ Feingold would endorse him.

5. Thanks very much for the breakdown, Mass! |
|
Is there a source where you're getting this info? A map? A breakdown by towns? It was probably right in the Globe or someplace and I just haven't seen it. :-)

7. Another Mass voter here |
|
My town (Lowell) went for Clinton, unfortunately. But I was happy to see that the gap had shrunken significantly over the last few weeks. The race goes on. It's nice to see more of the country getting a say in who the nominee will be. Usually, my primary vote makes no difference. But with MA moving to super Tuesday, I finally get a say. I wish my state had gone for Obama. But I'm glad to see that he's in pretty good shape for the upcoming contests. GOBAMA!

I'm very glad Missouri turned around - I hadn't given up when they'd called it for Missouri and I'm glad to say that St. Louis County and City helped bring him up so much.

10. I caucus on Saturday in WA |
|
and begging my husband to go since he hates politics but I live in small town and know a few ladies in my blook club for clinton and want husband to go to balance out that vote at least. He should do well in our state. The senators are for clinton for personal reasons and that pisses me off, i sent all of them emails that i want them to vote for who we pick no matter the winner.
But I guess that would mean kerry and kennedy have to go for her...ugh....

All eyes will be on your state on Saturday. I heard that Sen. Obama is very popular there and that he has a good chance in the caucus.
Keep us informed as the week goes on!

I don't vote until May. Grrrr.
I'm very disappointed in the northeast. Between those votes and the weird vote in MO, I am flummoxed. Maybe it is all just perception, red state perception against Hillary and blue state desire for a woman. I don't know, but this election sure shows some strange goings-on in this country.
Thanks for your fine Senators though, we couldn't have come this far without them!

:( The way thing are going though, this thing may actually go down to the wire, so maybe our votes won't be for naught.

Though early voting hurt him here (a couple of BC/HRC last minute visits), and the bad weather, Obama did show that he could compete in the southern states (i.e. SC, GA, AL, MO).

14. The good news about California... |
|
...is the Obama 'movement' and the people getting behind it. I really hoped Obama would 'win the state', but the delegate count is hopeful and the energy continues to be high. If anyone here missed California's First Lady (and wife of Arnold/McCain endorser) Maria Shriver, it's well worth your time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62_ajoKkuHA&eurl=http://my.barackobama.coSpontaneous, authentic, passionate...and brave! :7

I picked up my 71-year-old mother-in-law. She had been thinking she'd caucus for Hillary. I explained why I was caucusing for Obama, and we headed out. We got there a little early, so I helped check in caucusers in my precinct.
One of my neighbors arrived and said that in 2006, there were six caucusers total. We looked around. The lunchroom was packed. 20 tables held 15 people each, and people were standing against the walls. A reporter estimated 400-500 people.
Once we called the meeting to order, and initial business and rule-reading was done, we divided into precincts. Our chair called for Clinton supporters to raise their hands. 9 hands went up. He called for Obama supporters. 37 hands went up. 2 were uncommitted. In the second vote, one uncomitted went to Obama. Obama got 3 delegates from our princinct, one for Hillary.
The mood and energy in the room was incredible, and most of the buzz was about Obama. I met back up with my MIL after we adjourned, and she said she caucused for Obama. :-) Their precinct had 39 for Obama and 15 for Hillary.
Great feeling -- I really believe the huge turnout is a direct result of the Obama campaign's efforts and excitement about Obama.
BTW, In CO in 2004, there were 15,000 dem caucus-goers; last night, 118,000.

I think that there are people all over the country who are really energized by this campaign and can't wait to get out and vote FOR a great and inspiring candidate like Barack Obama.
Thanks for sharing this story. Wow!

AQny good stories about the caucuses? We have people in this group from Nebraska and Washington State, who will be holding caucuses this weekend. Any advice for dedicated Obama supporters or things to look for when they go to caucus?
