I don't support War.......
But I do support President Obama's Exit Plan out of Afghanistan.

I hate War, and marched against the Iraq War twice...
and I didn't even vote for the Afghanistan war indirectly
or directly, because even my Representative didn't vote for it,
and she was the only one.

What is unfortunate for Barack Obama is that
the Afghanistan War had already started before he got there....

So now that he is going to extricate us out of there,
I will support him in doing just that,
in the way that he has determined,
cause that IS what I voted for.

1. Well said, Frenchie
Obama's getting us OUT of both of these wars and I wholeheartedly support that. We're going to try to leave the Afghan people with at least some hope for keeping the Taliban out of power and terrorists out of their country before we leave.

We've bombed their country for 8 years with no real plan under Bush. Now Obama is getting us out but trying to clean up at least as much as he can before he does, so he's sending 30,000 troops there to help with that before everyone gets out.

3. Makes me wonder if a lot of the
opposition to this is just political?

I know that's cynical but why wouldn't they be taking this into consideration?

When bushcheney abandoned Afghanistan to go bomb Iraq weren't they aiding and abetting the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan? As well as fomenting more terrorists in Iraq.

2. I hear ya, Frenchie..
Pres Obama and those in his inner circle know what's going on and they think it's important for the safety of the Planet to wind down exactly in the way he layed it out for all the world to see.

Sure they kept a few things back.

And there are ways for us to help support our Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"In Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time , Greg Mortenson, and journalist David Oliver Relin, recount the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third-world to promote peace with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote communities in central Asia. Three Cups of Tea is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world—one school at a time."

My friend told me that "Three Cups of Tea" is required reading in the military over in Afghanistan.

4. I am particularly against collateral damage

I count the dead from an errant missle attack and those that arise from errant policies, including poorly handled exits.

While a dozen or so can be killed by an errant bomb the collapse of a state and all out civil war will cost tens of thousands.

No part of the world is a better candidate for apocalyptic type of civil war than Afghanistan/Pakistan/India. The partition of India and Pakistan alone cost the lives of between 500,000 and 1,000,000.

Obama is taking the adult approach, creating stable structures that can bring security and civil improvements.

5. I hope it's safe for me to say in this forum what I can't say in GD:P...
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 02:36 PM by Hekate
GD and GD: P are so toxic I don't dare criticize President Obama for anything there and add to the toxicity.

Last night I had insomnia and one of the thoughts running around the hamster-wheel was: Dear God, the Pentagon and CIA got to him and we are getting deeper into that mess, and it will destroy his presidency.

Fellow Obama supporters, I support him with all my heart, but... but...

Gah, I feel like Rachel Maddow saying, Talk me down somebody.

6. The thing that is so bad about GD and GDP right now is that they
are saying Obama betrayed the left about Afghanistan, that he lied. But he didn't. During his campaign, he said more than once that he would send more troops into Afghanistan if he thought it necessary, so he's keeping his word.

I hate war too, and I'm said that he does think it necessary to send additional troops in. But he's not breaking a promise, because he never made that promise.

then I take him at his word.

He wants what's best for our country and that means listening to his own council and consience as well as those who have been on the ground.

10. I'm glad some folks here remember that he said during his
campaign that he would send more troops in Afghan if he needed to. He is keeping his word. He's doing the right thing. There's no doubt in my mind that he's doing this because he has to. I support his decision and I support him every bit as much as I did the day I voted for him. When I read things like "I'm taking my Obama bumper sticker off and he's lost me faster than Clinton did" I either think these people are intentionally disrupting or they didn't listen to him during the campaign. I'm not even clicking on those threads.

11. I'm going with "intentionally disrupting". I'd think differently if it weren't the same...
characters over & over. They never have a positive response to anything this administration does. Keep in mind that most of these are folks who believed Ralph Nader when he told us there was no difference between Gore & Bush, and you see where that got us. The good news is that they're pretty much contained at the DU. LOL.

My ignore list is growing again, and I'm also hiding threads, because the crazy is just to much. And it's quite maddening.

13. Exactly. This is why I'm glad I found this forum. The freepers & the purists...
have taken over this board. I didn't think it could ever get as nasty as the primaries. Boy, was I wrong. If you point out that they never have anything positive to contribute, you're accused of squelching dissent, or asking people to sign loyalty oaths (lol).
