Bill Ford thanks Obama for GM, Chrysler rescues
http://freep.com/article/20091214/BUSINESS01/91214044/1322/Bill-Ford-thanks-Obama-for-GM-Chrysler-rescues

Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. met with President Barack Obama today and thanked him for stepping in to rescue General Motors and Chrysler.

Ford, who was in Washington to deliver an action list from the National Summit on the economy in Detroit last June, said Obama had stabilized not just GM and Chrysler but also auto suppliers.

"He was obviously interested in how the industry was going and I complimented him on how he handled the industry," Ford said.

Ford said his meeting with Obama lasted less than 15 minutes and was simply "a courtesy call."

Ford also said the automaker was planning conservatively for 2010 and that the economy was "OK but not great."

* I sometimes think people just don't understand what would have happened had these companies folded.

2. Think about it. We are getting the money back
And with that money available, we are going to fund measures that help with jobs and housing and other needs. And it's also nice that we won't be owning GM forever, taking on the responsibility for deciding what cars to sell and so forth. Don't forget the preserved health care and pensions for GM and Chrysler workers too, and the jobs that were saved. Would we really have been better off if the last of the workers working for the car companies were cast out into the street?
