Bush envisions U.S. presence in Iraq like S.Korea

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush would like to see a lengthy U.S. troop presence in Iraq like the one in South Korea to provide stability but not in a frontline combat role, the White House said on Wednesday.

The United States has had thousands of U.S. troops in South Korea to guard against a North Korean invasion for 50 years.

Democrats in control of the U.S. Congress have been pressing Bush to agree to a timetable for pulling troops from Iraq, an idea firmly opposed by the president.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said Bush would like to see a U.S. role in Iraq ultimately similar to that in South Korea.

"The Korean model is one in which the United States provides a security presence, but you've had the development of a successful democracy in South Korea over a period of years, and, therefore, the United States is there as a force of stability," Snow told reporters.

He said U.S. bases in Iraq would not necessarily be permanent because they would be there at the invitation of the host government and "the person who has done the invitation has the right to withdraw the invitation."

So the invasion and occupation is to protect Iraq from an invasion?

"at the invitation of the host government"?

Iraqi bill demands U.S. troops withdraw

1. The are feeding the country their intentions on how long they
intend to stay bit by bit. They think we're too friggin' stupid to figure out that this was the plan all along.

And they think that the Iraqi people are gonna go for it.

What schmucks.

4. When does delusion reach insanity? Why don't we establish
an open-ended military presence in every country in the world? After all, we are "the sole remaining superpower." We are "the indispensable nation." We are the font of wisdom and are endowed with inexhaustible wealth.

I'm now waiting for Bush to announce where he will draw the "demilitarized zone" in Iraq. We'll need one of those to be like Korea.

I'm sick and tired of it.

5. Of course, one big difference is that it's very rare for a solidier in S. Korea to get killed

This is obviously related to the fact that there is a friendly government firmly in power in the area of Korea where US troops are stationed. At what point does the Chimperor imagine that Iraq will be a calm as the Koreas? Another obvious difference is that it is clear who US troops in South Korea are supposed to be defending against -- and it ain't South Koreans.

He's nutz. Just nutz.

7. Too bad Halliburton can't manufacture robotic soldiers
We could occupy every corner of the globe that way and have a "security presence" lording over each and every activity of the human race, everywhere on the planet.
