May I nominate someone for the most dangerous person in the world?
http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/conditions/05/30/tb.flight/index.html
Man knew he had TB before flying overseas.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A man infected with the extensively drug-resistant form of TB known as XDR TB knew he was not supposed to travel overseas but did so anyway, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Julie Gerberding told CNN's "American Morning" on Wednesday.
However, that is not what the Atlanta man -- whose name has not been released -- told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The man, who is quarantined at an Atlanta, Georgia, hospital, said Fulton County health officials told him they "preferred" he not travel, but knew about his plans for an overseas wedding and honeymoon, the newspaper reported.
CNN is trying to contact the man and his family.
He said he has a form of drug-resistant TB and has no symptoms, but the man and Gerberding both said it wasn't until he was in Europe that his diagnosis of XDR TB was confirmed by lab tests. ( TB patient quarantined after traveling Video)

Can we figure out how a pandemic might start?

1. What isn't being asked is from whom did this man contract his drug-resistant form of TB?

6. She's been tested
and she's okay. He's in quarrantine in a hospital somewhere.

THere was an interview this morning on one of the cable stations about this guy. Whatever bug he has, it's in very tiny quantitites so he might not be very contageous.

Certainly glad they are playing it safe and trying to round up all the passengers for testing, but from what the segment said this may not be a huge health crisis.

3. If I am on his plane I would not seek out a doctor
Since my deductible is so high I would probably wait until I was near death before seeking medical aid. As of now I am avoiding doctors as much as possible. I am sure I am far from being the only one in that boat.
So if the CDC called and said 'get to a doctor'. I would ask "who's paying for it?" If it is coming out of my pocket I am in no hurry to go to the doc. Sorry folks.

10. Our taxes pay for public health situations like this. That's why it's called
PUBLIC HEALTH.

I never had to pay a DIME when I got exposed to rabies, had to receive post-exposure prophylaxis and titer testing, had an adverse reaction to the treatment and had to be hospitalized overnight, needed special handling for completing the treatment - all at LA County General/USC Medical Center.

None of the 22 other people exposed had to pay either. Times like this we ought to be DAMNED GRATEFUL for "big government".

13. My daughter got exposed to whooping cough in college
ended up costing me a thousand dollars when she reacted to the medication. I don't trust these bastards at all.
Prior to these thieves that we now have in office I would have assumed what you say to be in effect. Today I wouldn't. I would want it in writing first.

5. He is our present day Typhoid Mary.
I believe that this form of TB originated in Russian prisons.

9. While this story is a bit scary...
...it also raises an interesting and difficult question regarding the clashing of rights -- where do his begin/end with respect to ours. The public should be protected, I think virtually all of us would agree, but to what degree are we comfortable in stripping this man of his freedoms? How much should the taxpayers be willing to spend to make the living quality of his isolation/confinement as tolerable for him as possible? Should he be reasonably expected to accept the confines of a hospital room for weeks or months on end? Would you accept that?

Also, I wonder, if this were a woman whether she would have been permitted the same latitude/freedoms that this man was enjoying prior to making this trip? I notice he hasn't, at least in this piece, been tagged with a name like "Typhoid Harry." If this were a woman I think MSM would have immediately attached such a name.
