Overheard at Barnes & Noble this morning...
I'm always reading posts about overheard conversations on DU and now I can finally post one of my own! I was browsing the magazine rack at Barnes & Noble here in Columbus this morning when I caught the word "Republicans" in the conversation of two women just coming in the front door. Once they got inside the following dialog occurred, in easily audible voices right at the front of the store:

First Woman: Awful, awful.

Second woman: Horrible, horrible.

First: My husband said last night that Bush is so bad he's thinking of becoming a Democrat!

Second: Well, I'm not quite there yet.

First: No...

Second: Almost, but not quite.

I missed the rest as they moved toward the back of the store, but I got a real kick out of the part I heard!

1. We listened to a husband and wife
who own the local award-winning BBQ joint in town tell us Sunday night that they were staunch Republicans and probably voting for Hillary Clinton. "We like her stand on the issues." They then mentioned that they are vastly unhappy with the entire slate of Republican candidates.

I almost fell off my chair.

4. I know several staunch Republicans who were really torn between
Bush and Kerry in 2004. Somehow, they came up with math that said they'ld be paying more taxes and ended up voting for Bush. Now they deeply, deeply, sincerely regret that vote and are dissillusioned with the party as a whole. The Tom Delays and Gingrichs just don't put the stiffy on them like it used to.

6. Well, that's not all that surprising.
If Republicans would actually look at Hillary's positions, most would probably feel the same way.

Democrats, on the other hand...

9. The media has its work cut out for them
portraying Hillary as a flaming, far-left liberal while constantly harping that She voted for Bush's war ...

(I'm saying that, but I'll vote for her if she's the nominee ... almost anything is better than the right-wing-rejects that the repukes have to spin and nuance about why they will vote for fill-in-the-blank Repuke candidate ...)

11. You might want to tell these folks. They evidently didn't get the memo.

If you're in the area, stop in. It's the best barbecue I've ever eaten. They've also fed thousands of soldiers on their own dime. (Yeah, they get donations, etcetera, but they're sure not compensated for the work involved.) They do it because they love it. Republican or Democrat, they put their money where their mouths are, and we're lucky to have them here.

5. The thing about Central and Northern Ohioan republicans
They are staunch on the 'traditional conservative' values. The values that Bush claims he represents but is no where near.

Southern Ohio...Cinci is rather surrounded by Fundies regretfully. Then again, if it weren't for Southern Ohio's conservative air, Larry Flynt's empire would have never happened.

7. Exactly. Many Republicans think Bush is TOO LIBERAL...
CUT TAXES! ELIMINATE WELFARE! LESS GOVERNMENT! SCHOOL VOUCHERS! CULTURE WAR! BRING BACK SLAVERY! (OK, I just threw that last one in there) (oh, and before I forget - :sarcasm: so you won't think I'm really a right wing spy even after having posted near 2,000 messages here.)

Posts like the OP miss the point that the conversation we'd REALLY like to hear is, "I can't believe I voted Republican. Bush is bad, but seeing how no Republican ever called him on his ways, I now know that ALL Republicans are liars and cheats! I can't believe how much they fooled me! Never again!"

The problem here is that the neo-cons and "conservatives" get to pin everything on Bush and continue their merry way of Reagan right wing radio talk show philosophy, just waiting for us to stub our toe...
