Olbermann: "GORE & ROMNEY"-Best Guess On Dem/Repub 08 Nominees
Edited on Wed May-30-07 04:34 PM by kpete
Take five with Keith Olbermann
We knew the popular nighttime MSNBC anchor, a former ESPN host and WCVB sportscaster, was a fan of lists. So we asked Olbermann, in Boston on Thursday night to speak at an ACLU-Massachusetts banquet, to give us five quick answers.

QUESTION

Best guess right now on the Democratic and Republican nominees in 2008?

"Al Gore and Mitt Romney. I think the far right will eventually recoil from Giuliani and pick Romney because he looks like a president and sounds like a Bing Crosby record. And I think Gore can have the nomination for the asking."

his recently announced, insurance-industry penned "healthcare proposal" will spell the end of anyone taking him seriously as a candidate.

9. This was a good one from KO:
Bonus question: Odds that Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize?
"3:1 -- and the odds are that he'll actually win it, but the odds it will go to somebody else on a recount are 3:2."

14. I am going to post something that will make me quite unpopular
with a certain faction on DU. That 'something' is that I hope, desperately, that Al Gore is not the democratic nominee.
The reason I say this is that, if he should become the nominee, it means he will be acknowledging failure in his primary mission, that of reforming the system such that idiots like Guiliani and bush and that arrogant jerk, Romney have no chance at becoming the force that has wrecked the world like the current occupant of the whitehouse has.

Gore's vision and mission, self appointed though it may be, are so much bigger than merely becoming the president of the United States. He works and thinks on a much bigger stage than that and I support him in choice of that much larger work.

18. the nomination is Gore's "for the asking"? Wrong.
Edited on Wed May-30-07 04:43 PM by BeyondGeography
Gore will have to fight like hell to get the nomination. Edwards and Clinton will play for keeps and Obama's skills will only get better; he will retain much of the youth and minority vote even if some of his older supporters peel away to Gore (I might fit that description, but I won't automatically go to Gore; he first has to prove to me that he knows how to reach people beyond his base and not be a pompous ass).

It's doable for Gore, but not the cakewalk that KO apparently envisions.

Edited on Wed May-30-07 05:09 PM by BeyondGeography
A Democrat channels $50 to $65 billion of reclaimed tax dollars from the rich to extend health care coverage to uninsured children and the poor and you characterize it as an insurance-industry bail-out. Come back when you have something interesting to say.

23. If Romney is the best the repukes have, they're toast.
But then again, who else they got? McCain? He promotes not only the Iraq War, but advocates bombing Iran. Brownback? Too much of a brown shirt. Tancredo? Too much of a jackass. Jeb? Would anyone in their right mind vote for another Bush again?

26. He is a very smart man Mr Gore -
And he is a politican, too - that is unusual.

He must wait this out - there will be plenty of blood letting the next months. He doesn't need to be a part of it.

Pick your spot Mr Gore - then kick them in the ass.

Wouldn't that be a change - a smart president.

I think we will get a chance to correct the history that was supposed to be.

Joe

Best US foreign intervention?
"Afghanistan. One can argue that World War I qualifies -- only our shipping was attacked, not the nation per se. But for pure justified bona fide 'world's policeman' work, going after the Taliban was inarguable. And incomplete."

Smart guy, that Keith Olbermann.

30. Gore vs Romney
On the Republican side, I can't argue with the proposition that Romney has a good chance of being nominated. He has money, he is slippery slick, and he looks the part. So what if he has changed his positions to follow the political winds? We won't like that but we won't vote for him anyway. The conservative media will eat him up. Witness the softballs lobbed at him in his 60 Minutes lame-fest.

On the Democratic side, I have been thinking this for months, if Gore wants the nomination he would instantly become a contender.

How would this play? One way of thinking would be that Hillary would still be a major contender with her connections and money and name recognition. Gore could easily move into the role of major anti-Hillary candidate. Neither Obama nor Edwards has that position nailed down as of yet. Then, once he becomes the dominant anti-Hillary, he defeats her for the nomination.

Or....perhaps Hillary could be hurt more by Gore's entry. I would not be surprised at this outcome either. If THAT occurs, Gore could almost instantly become the frontrunner. Or it could be a race between Gore and Obama.

I don't think we can really predict at this point just what effect Gore running would have...but we CAN be sure that it would have a HUGE effect on the dynamics of the race, one way or other. I would find it very difficult not to believe he would instantly get a sizeable following that would put him into contention. From there, the nomination may just be his to lose.

As to Gore vs Romney? A classic matchup! Can't wait!

Just curious as to your opinion.

BTW, I too think it will be Gore versus Thompson. I believe the threat of Gore's running is exactly why Thompson has been coached to jump in.
