Iraq--the Coming GOP Collapse?

Was talking to an influential Republican strategist who thinks if Iraq looks the way it does now in September, Bush will lose about 25 Senate Republicans on a bill with some sort of timetable for withdrawal.

2. Bush only needs one vote - his. He can veto withdrawal resolutions
So I wouldn't get too optimistic.

7. Thom Hartman was predicting this yesterday...
...that the Dems caved on funding because they knew that there were a whole bunch of Publicans willing to give the White House until September, but no more if there is no sign of progress at that point.

But, as Hartman pointed out, that is still short-sighted for our side, because, should Bush see that he's about to lose more of his own, he will come up with his own "redeployment" plan ahead of that in late August. Therefore, he and his party will claim credit for ratcheting down the war, while the impression that will remain of the Democrats in Congress will be of their "cave-in" this past month, making them look both insincere and impotent. Result: Publicans (and Bush) win, we lose.

:-(

11. I've been torn between your scenario and
stupidface saying what he's been saying all along: "I see progress." I think they'll trot out the neocons in Sept. to catapult the propaganda. They think they can fool the country again. Yes, they're that stupid.

8. Only 41 Senators are needed to shut down funding for the Iraq war.
That's all. If it's a game of "chicken" then the AWOL Coward of Crawford is easy prey, imho.
