The economy and how people are suffering
well folks today I met once again a lady I met well before the 2004 election

She has been reduced to begging to make ends meet

She votes these days, but she said... "I don't know if it matters, or if they decided how they are going to count."

So I quietly mentioned caging, and of course she nodded

Then we talked about the economy... and how chicken has gone up over 150%.

And how it is becoming more and more difficult for her and her daughter to just make it from month to moth

As I did the last time, I gave her some money... and would have gladly bought dinner for them, but realized she was too proud to accept that

Did I also mention she is voting while black?

Folks, this is the reality on the ground. And it is for those people, those who are voling for the first time in their lives, that we need to ensure that the system works...

It is for them, even if I am the greatest cynic (who has taken the POV I held when I was 18m, which was does not matter if I vote, but goddammit I will vote. that was another country where those feelings were prevalent... and today I share them with this lady. It does not matter... but goddammit I will still cast it)

1. But the DJIA's at 13,000+
:sarcasm:

There are people who get their economic information from the TV. There are others who get it from living real life.

by the way, welcome to DU

Oh and did I mention the Dow was also insantely high on or about a nice October day in 1929?

the only reason why it is that high is the federal intervention unit... look it up

:-)

When it crashes, it will be spectacular

For the recod I am not looking forwwards to that one... I live in the economy, but the very rich don't

It will affect me, but not them

3. Why the Dow is so high...
Did anybody hear Robert Reich on NPR today? He had a really interesting explanation for the strangely high stock market. Basically, companies have been taking a lot of stock out of the market with buybacks and leveraged buyouts, thus reducing the total supply of stock available to investors. Voila! Supply-and-demand raises prices and creates the illusion of a booming market. He also had a warning that when the stock is put back into the market it will have the opposite effect.

7. "When it crashes, it will be spectacular." It will indeed. We got
a taste of that in February of this year. A Chinese official named Cheng Siwei (I'm a collector of trivia) announced that only 30 percent of the stocks on the Shanghai Stock Exchange "are good to invest in by Western standards." In reaction, the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets took a dive and next day so did Wall Street. Now when the Chinese sneeze we catch cold. If the Chinese catch a cold, our stock market will get pneumonia.

Get a freakin' job!

"She votes these days, but she said... "I don't know if it matters, or if they decided how they are going to count.""
Of course if fucking matters. Women fought hard for the right to vote. How the hell does it not matter?

"Then we talked about the economy... and how chicken has gone up over 150%."
So has beef, gas, housing, utilties, transportation, clothing, What's the point?

"And how it is becoming more and more difficult for her and her daughter to just make it from month to moth"
I like "month to moth" but seriously, get a job and get on a written budget. If you can't get a job...get on a written budget. It's that simple.

"As I did the last time, I gave her some money... and would have gladly bought dinner for them, but realized she was too proud to accept that"
That's just like giving a drunk a drink or a gambler a $100. People have to learn to earn money and own their efforts.

"Folks, this is the reality on the ground. And it is for those people, those who are voling for the first time in their lives, that we need to ensure that the system works..."
That ain't going to happen.. I'll let you in on a little secret, "the system" is fucked. We took over in Congress and nothing changed. People need to learn to start fending for themselves. You could put the fucking Whigs in power and it wouldn't change the price of chicken in Kansas.

Edit for spelling

6. Here are some things for you
1.- She has a freaking job, in fact two of them. They are both near minimum wage and this city is probably one of the most expensive ones to live at

2.- She was referring to voter manipulation, which actually I was shocked she knew about

3.- You don't get it, cannot explain it

4.- See number one, not everyone has a good paying job as you obviously do

5.- I guess you never heard of the great depression... we are heading that way. Remind me not to tive you any help when you need it

6.- Yep, we may need a hot revolution, are you leading it?

Boy for somebody who is suposedly liberal you do pass judgement on people ...
