Cindy Isn't Speaking For You Anymore

Letter from Cindy Sheehan

Cindy Sheehan was a mother who lost her son and wanted to know why. Her initial trip to Crawford inspired a flashmob of thousands to join her in the ditches outside Bush's ranch and gave, as they say, a "face" to the anti-war movement. Unlike the other faces we see on our TVs, hers wasn't all pretty and polished like the professional pundits - the ones that are paid to tell us what to think. Her features showed quite plainly the sadness of her lot. Nevertheless, Cindy looked better on camera than the real faces of the antiwar movement - the ones that had been shot away or melted off inside a burning Humvee.

To be perfectly honest with you, I've felt like writing a letter like Cindy's damn near every day. Of course, being the Freewayblogger I'd have to keep it short:

3. I rarely say "Fuck You"...
...but I guess that sums up how I feel about many of the people down there--riding in those
cars.

I think I am exhausted and drained--from paying attention and worrying about what BushCo
is doing to this country--and what they're about to do next.

Meanwhile, these clowns in their cars--talking on their phones and driving to Pottery Barn
to pick up more floating shelves for their media room---are just fine and dandy!

What's wrong with everyone and why don't they care?

That sign pretty much sums up how I feel about their slovenly, consumer-driven, self-centered
myopic, anesthetized attitudes.

I used to have hope that our nation could turn this around. Now, I feel
like the sign says.

12. Really! summed it up pretty well

I read an article about a musician who moved to Berlin. The title of the article was

"I'm Tired of America"

That phrase keeps coming to my mind. I sit in traffic on my way to work, counting the SUVs with 1 person in them. People don't want to talk about anything that matters, just tv shows, celebrities, trivialities and trappings.

I'm tired of America.

than with the usual stuff you'd use to persuade people.

29. catch more flies with honey than vinegar, but you catch the most flies with shit!
(i always loved that corollary from my great uncle.)

and the reason you catch more with shit is because most of the sheeple masses are shit eating maggots!
so you gotta give 'em what they want, y'know?

(i always learned the most effective, yet brutal truths about the mob mentality from my brief stint in sales.)

17. It works. But it's too late.
We are the ones who are responsible. We are the ones who allowed this to happen. Of course a good "leader" could or would have set the tone for the proper direction. But it wasn't that simple. There were around two billion people in the world when my parents were born. Things were good. The planet looked infinite. There were cherry orchards in the Bay Area. You could take an adventure, and drive to Yosemite.

The word "we" is a bit more complicated than it seems. We refers to the parents. What they did is what we got to live with. Their decisions made our lives. We are the children. They made a commercial world that entrapped us. I see this as clearly as day, but I cannot make anyone else see it. It's a terrible thing to see. Once you see it you cannot go back. And now that we're here, we are not going back without serious pain.

Bush is only a small part of this problem. It's not important that he opted out of the Kyoto protocol. Do you really need a policeman to tell you about your consumption? I think the answer is yes. I guess it's not apparent when we buy grapes from Costa Rica that they have a large carbon footprint. I guess I knew that since I grew up in a thermodynamic household. So I change my position on how important Bush is, half way through my paragraph. It's still too late.

This photo makes my day just a little bit brighter. Someone gets it. And maybe a few people driving get it. It's not a statement of anger as much as a statement of who is responsible.

It may be too late, but we can slow down the wreck. We must begin talking about population AND consumption. If it's too uncomfortable (and I had a post deleted over this last night), then expect more of what you've seen in recent years.

I can't say enough good things about this approach. The freeways (or toll roads as some of us have to suffer) are a great forum.

My hats off to all the freeway bloggers.
