After watching his roommate fatally wounded in a roadside bombing, an Army private wonders why the lives of good men are being lost when the Iraqis pose no threat to us and don’t want us there.

BAGHDAD, May 12 — My name is Donald Hudson Jr. I have been serving our country’s military actively for the last three years. I am currently deployed to Baghdad on Forward Operating Base Loyalty, where I have been for the last four and a half months.

I came here as part of the first wave of this so called “troop surge”, but so far it has effectively done nothing to quell insurgent violence. I have seen the rise in violence between the Sunni and Shiite. This country is in the middle of a civil war that has been on going since the seventh century.

Why are we here when this country still to date does not want us here? Why does our president’s personal agenda consume him so much, that he can not pay attention to what is really going on here?

Let me tell you a story. On May 10, I was out on a convoy mission to move barriers from a market to a joint security station. It was no different from any other night, except the improvised explosive device that hit our convoy this time, actually pierced through the armor of one of our trucks. The truck was immediately engulfed in flames, the driver lost control and wrecked the truck into one of the buildings lining the street. I was the driver of the lead truck in our convoy; the fifth out of six was the one that got hit. All I could hear over the radio was a friend from the sixth truck screaming that the fifth truck was burning up real bad, and that they needed fire extinguishers real bad. So I turned my truck around and drove through concrete barriers to get to the burning truck as quickly as I could. I stopped 30 meters short of the burning truck, got out and ripped my fire extinguisher out of its holder, and ran to the truck. I ran past another friend of mine on the way to the burning truck, he was screaming something but I could not make it out. I opened the driver’s door to the truck and was immediately overcome by the flames. I sprayed the extinguisher into the door, and then I saw my roommate’s leg. He was the gunner of that truck. His leg was across the driver’s seat that was on fire and the rest of his body was further in the truck. My fire extinguisher died and I climbed into the truck to attempt to save him. I got to where his head was, in the back passenger-side seat. I grabbed his shoulders and attempted to pull him from the truck out the driver’s door. I finally got him out of the truck head first. His face had been badly burned. His leg was horribly wounded. We placed him on a spine board and did our best to attempt “Buddy Aid”. We heard him trying to gasp for air. He had a pulse and was breathing, but was not responsive. He was placed into a truck and rushed to the “Green Zone”, where he died within the hour. His name was Michael K. Frank. He was 36 years old. He was a great friend of mine and a mentor to most of us younger soldiers here.

Now I am still here in this country wondering why, and having to pick up the pieces of what is left of my friend in our room. I would just like to know what is the true reason we are here? This country poses no threat to our own. So why must we waste the lives of good men on a country that does not give a damn about itself? Most of my friends here share my views, but do not have the courage to say anything.

1. More and more of them are speaking out.
Unfortunately, I doubt Bush will listen to them.

18. Which is why, more and more, BushCo. is limiting their ability
to speak out, i.e. their blogs and letters.

2. You, Private Hudson, have asked the basic question.
Many of your fellow Americans have been asking it since the first day of the invasion. You have the right to demand, in the absence of any answer to it, a trip home where you and your colleagues belong. Americans support you. We just want you home.

3. He poses a valid question
It's too bad he'll never get an honest answer to it. What a sad story.

5. Guess what?
This is the beginning of the end. When the enlisted men start to question what they are doing and why they are there, it's only a matter of time before it's all over.

This is classic Viet Nam, all over again. At a certain point, the US troops were in a real quandary. They KNEW, more than Johnson or anyone else back in the White House, scrambling trying to figure out what to do next.

They knew.
It was time to get out of there.

Now, Private Hudson already knows the answer as to why we're there. He's already asked his enlisted buddies and they've told him.
"Dude, it's the oil"
"You know? we're here to take their oil".

But, notice Mr. Hudson is directing the question to a higher authority, the President, or maybe Congress. He knows the answer, but he wants to hear it from them. Because it's not what he was told.

And NOW HE WANTS SOME ANSWERS.

Guess what? He's not going to get any. And I can also tell you what will happen next.
This Platoon won't give a shit any more. They'll burn out some clutches in the jeep they're driving. Maybe tear up some treads on the damn tank they're driving, until they fill up with sand and become unusable.

8. Please see "Sir! No Sir!" to illustrate this point.
I had no idea until I saw this docu that the troops ended the Vietnam War by their rebellion. It became impossible to continue.

6. sorry to hear he is in this situation, glad to see he is speaking up,
sorry to read that his friends there are too afraid to speak up and ask that question. maybe if they all stuck together and started asking over and over people would sit up and fucking take notice.

maybe donald should ask his question to all the republicans back home who voted for the white house freak, all the republicans who continue to "support" the war in their own twisted up way and the republics who continue to worship that bastard who stole the white house.

ask them donald, because liberals will only tell you that there is no valid reason you are there, that it's all about the oil (either stealing it or keeping it turned off), so the criminals in the white house could make a killing on their war profiteering, because cheney is gonna get some huge payment from halliburton when he's back in his street clothes, etc.

ask the republicans. and then see if you believe what they say.
and when you get back home and they tell you you're going to be redeployed...JUST SAY NO!

17. There will be many more speaking out
I know a guy who is going on his second tour in November and he has said that all his buddies feel this war is bullshit and they will vote for anybody who says they will end this war.

I am not questioning what this man has to say, but three years and still a private?

But I would think he would go by PFC if that is what he is and typically you are promoted within a year to private first class. I'm not in the army, so I don't really know for sure.

25. The sad truth is
that this same scenario has been true from the start of king george and the repuke's fascist adventure in Iraq. While Powell was lying to the UN and king george and unka dick and condi et al were lying to us, this was true. No American should ever have been sent there.

Edited on Thu May-31-07 11:45 AM by roamer65
"This country is in the middle of a civil war that has been on going since the seventh century."

This particular civil war was unleashed due to our occupation of Iraq. There was no civil war in Iraq before March, 2003. I'm glad he's publically asking these tough questions, but blaming this on the Iraqi people is factually wrong.

32. I live my life here in comfort, stateside, and hear these stories of hell...
...and I'm shocked that more soldiers haven't just gone AWOL for this bullshit war. 100% bullshit.

This kid knows the answer to his question: He and his friends are being used as cannon fodder to justify the $500+ billion annual budget of the DoD, a large part of which lands in the pockets of private military contractors and suppliers.

That's it, that's all, that's all there is.

Oh, and I'm sure squeezed in there somewhere is also some contrived diabolical scheme for world domination of one form or another. They are being used for that as well.
