Jeb Bush and Ken Mehlman in WSJ: "We believe this legislation will be good for the GOP."
Edited on Thu May-31-07 03:21 PM by seafan
In today's Wall Street Journal, Jeb Bush and Ken Mehlman don't hide their intent in the new immigration bill:

Ex-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former RNC chief Ken Mehlman pen a Wall Street Journal op-ed in support of the Senate immigration bill. “Both of us have spent much of our professional lives working to help build the Republican Party. We believe this legislation will be good for the GOP. Hispanic Americans are natural Republicans. Many tend to be pro-life, pro-military and pro-small business… The immigration reform before Congress is far from perfect; it's a compromise after all. But, on balance, we are convinced that this legislation is the right choice. It represents progress in making America safer and stronger; progress in making our economy more competitive and flexible; progress in reinforcing the rule of law and progress in the important work of national unity. Doing nothing is not an option.”
....by Mark Murray, May 31, 2007

Uh-oh, there's trouble in paradise at David Frum's blog at NRO:

This immigration debate is having another catastrophic effect for the president and the GOP, by reminding everyone of other problems and failures long left undiscussed ... as a reader makes clear in this letter:

I'm just floored by this statement in the Jeb Bush/Ken Mehlman op-ed: "The bill provides real border security for the first time, protecting us against the entry of terrorists and stemming the flow of illegal drugs." For the first time? It's been how long since 9/11? How long since Bush's first inauguration? How long did he have working majorities in both houses? ...

While I'm at it, how about: "Hispanics are also the fastest growing segment of our population. Salsa outsells ketchup and tacos outsell hot dogs. One out of eight people under 35 in Nebraska is Hispanic." I thought Jeb was supposed to be the smart Bush.

I don't have a subscription to the WSJ, but from these bits and pieces, it doesn't look good for the long term viability of the GOP.

It's obvious that any and all groups of Americans will be pitted against each other by the GOP, for nothing but cynical and soulless use, to satisfy Republican ends.

We don't need any more proof than this.

Yeah, but how many Mexicans hate Mexicans (Brown people)?

And, why do Republicans think they are the only ones that are pro-small business?

10. Republicans are pro any of these
They have run the military into the ground, run small business into the ground and don't give a crap about people after they are born. I can only think they like poorly educated people to influx into this country because the poorly educate are easier to propaganda into believing the Republican party house of lies.

6. Translation:
"Progress in making our economy more competitive and flexible." Meaning cheap labor until this set of immigrants figure out they are being screwed, then the illegals right behind them will displace them.

7. Jeb's just trying to rebuild what Shrub destroyed: the Rethug Party
Edited on Thu May-31-07 04:08 PM by LSparkle
With the Thugs, it's always been party over country but in Shrub's case, he put personal gain over even his crooked party, and now bro Jebby's trying to clean up the mess (just to save his family's political face). May they all rot in hell (GOP and BFEE).

8. The Immigration Issue cuts both ways
Frankly, this issue splits both parties along class lines, pitting working class Americans against their betters who want either cheap labor or cheap votes. At their direct expense.

For a deeply unpopular president to call the only supporters he has left bigots who "don't want to do what's right for America" makes no rational sense whatsoever, but then again the role of delusion and wishful thinking in the makeup of Bush is incalculable.

9. Did Jebbie just lose the White House?
Fwee Weepublic not happy about his editorial:

Well, ok, that settles it, Jeb will never be president. Fine by me.

We've heard that song and dance before, Jeb and Ken.

No one's buying this time.

Doing nothing is the real amnesty.
I guess it all depends on the meaning of "is."

It enhances the rule of law

And they can say that with a straight face.

How does giving amnesty to law breakers enhance the rule of law?

If anything, this bill does the exact opposite. It says that our laws against entering the country illegally are irrelevant. And that does not enhance the rule of law.
