2. It's a Randi trademark to go off on pointless rants once every few weeks |
|
Just let her get it out of her system and everything will return to normal.

These kids today! All dope-smoking lazy, long-hair, hippie freaks.
Their clothes are all weird too! Can't they dress all the same like the rest of us upstanding American citizens?!
My respect for Randi is down a few notches after spending at least an hour dissing young people about hairstyle. Randi the 60's is over. On this one we won. Any one can wear their hair however they want.

5. What about white kids with dreads? I LOVE dreadlocks and was going to let my son get them until |
|
I read about a guy who had them for 5 years and when he cut them off he found the texture of his hair was completely different than it was before he got his dreads. Three years AFTER he cut the dreads off, his hair was STILL CURLY...when he use to have straight hair. Pretty weird, eh? Anyway, my son has curly/wavy hair now, which he straightens :grr:, and when I told him the story about the guy and his new curly hair after the dreads, dear son changed his mind about getting dreads. :)
SO...what's up with the white kids and dread talk on Randi's show? She doesn't like white people with dreads? Or what? If so, why not? It's just a hair style.:eyes: What's she saying?

6. She doesn't think white kids should have dreads |
|
it's not "culturally normal". And the only reason white kids have dreads is because they are too lazy to brush their hair. And it makes them unemployable.
I guess she thinks us white folks should just stick with our own kind.

10. *sigh* Like you posted...that sounds EXACTLY my parents when I was in my 'hippie' days. |

The crap I use to do to my hair was UNBELIEVABLE! The bigger the FRIZZ, the better! I'm sorry to hear Randi doesn't like dreadlocks on white people.:( That's so silly, PLUS dreadlocks are a LOT of work. You have to maintain them if you want to keep them looking good. You have to wash them (or they grow mold :puke:), let them air dry, apply wax on a weekly basis, and wind the stray hairs into the dreads constantly. I think her premise of white people being too lazy to brush their hair just doesn't wash with this dreads thing because they are so time consuming. She must not realize that, eh? In fact, that was the only thing I didn't like about them...they are too much work. Lazy doesn't work here, in Randi's excuse, that is.
I would like to know how African Americans feel about white people with dreads though. Randi being white and having an opinion on that, makes no sense to me.:)

8. What she is saying is quite simple |
|
(and she was basically talking about college students) that if you want to get a job in the corporate world dread locks are going to hurt your chances of getting that job. So many young people complain that they can't find a job, and they look like a pin cushion.
Sorry, but if you want a corporate job you do have to conform.

15. Well, that was her whole thing |
|
She said it was OK for black people because that is "their culture". But white people shouldn't have dreads because it not "culturally normal" and the only reason they do it is becasue they are too lazy to brush. Then when a black man called in and questioned that--he stopped just short of calling the comment racist--Randi went off.

12. Is that an east coast thing? |

I work for one of the biggest corps on the planet. My co-workers run the gamut of straight-up establishment types, rockers, goths, freaky tat chicks, surfers, long hairs, rastas, you name it. They were hired for their talent, ability and smarts, not what they look like.
Of course none of them are in the executive suites, but I doubt if any of them want to be there; I know I don't.

14. I wonder about that too |

Here in MadCity, dreads are just another hair style. I see them in 'corporate' and university offices, hospitals, engineering firms, biotech firms, etc...not to mention retail stores and restaurants. Same thing with piercings (one or two per face, anyway).
She kind of sounds like an idiot ranting about it.
