Oh the humanity!

1. I just love the fact that this guy will be "TB guy" for the rest of his life.
"Hey, aren't you TB guy?"

"Yeah, yeah... I'm TB guy..."

At the very least he should get a spot on the next Surreal Life or something.

51. "One day lad, all this will be yours" "What, the curtains?"
FATHER:
One day, lad, all this will be yours!
PRINCE HERBERT:
What, the curtains?
FATHER:
No. Not the curtains, lad. All that you can see, stretched out over the hills and valleys of this land! This'll be your kingdom, lad.
HERBERT:
But Mother--
FATHER:
Father, lad. Father.
HERBERT:
B-- b-- but Father, I don't want any of that.
FATHER:
Listen, lad. I built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was swamp. Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So, I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one... stayed up! And that's what you're gonna get, lad: the strongest castle in these islands.
HERBERT:
But I don't want any of that. I'd rather--
FATHER:
Rather what?!
HERBERT:
I'd rather...

...just... sing!
FATHER:
Stop that! Stop that! You're not going into a song while I'm here. Now listen, lad. In twenty minutes, you're getting married to a girl whose father owns the biggest tracts of open land in Britain.
HERBERT:
B-- but I don't want land.
FATHER:
Listen, Alice,--
HERBERT:
Herbert.
FATHER:
'Erbert. We live in a bloody swamp. We need all the land we can get.
HERBERT:
But-- but I don't like her.
FATHER:
Don't like her?! What's wrong with her?! She's beautiful. She's rich. She's got huge... tracts o' land!
HERBERT:
I know, but I want the-- the girl that I marry to have...

...a certain,... special... something!
FATHER:
Cut that out! Cut that out! Look, you're marrying Princess Lucky, so you'd better get used to the idea!

Sorry...couldn't resist.

16. Oh Get Real.
For your premise to hold even a drop of water we would have to derive that if he hadn't existed, they would've MAGICALLY all of a sudden started paying attention to the things you want them to and reporting with merit.

Since that expectation is ludicrous at best, your premise does not in fact hold any water.

25. No, It Actually Was Completely Accurate.
The premise carries no water whatsoever. The premise was that this would be used in place of reporting what we consider 'real' news. If you believe that had this story not existed, that a story of significance to us would be in its place, then I have a bridge I wanna sell ya.

20. actually th only drug that really works on TB is a common ingredient in popular cough syrup in Mexic...
and by the time kids are half grown they are apparently immune to its effects and every other disease is resistant to it too.. including TB which is rampant .. i heard a lot of warnings in El Paso, o woman was coughing her guts out in the Xray waiting room and refused to wear a mask..I was out of the room by the 3rd caugh..it was nasty.. 4 nursed surrounded her in masks and told scolded and threatened her in mexican for about 10 minutes before would put the mask on.. as soon as they left she took it off and the room emptied out. i filed a complaint and got a copy.

Edited on Thu May-31-07 08:41 PM by AZBlue
It's a rule of media layout - the photo's in the upper left corner and you never want the subject of a photograph "looking out," beyond the margins. So, in the upper left corner, they have to be looking to the right, and vice versa. (if that doesn't make sense, click the link and you'll see what I mean - by reversing the picture, they are now "looking in" toward the middle of the page).

61. Lawsuits for what?
To successfully sue, a plaintiff would have to be able to prove that he actually harmed them (aka infected them), not just placed them at risk. The only thing I can see someone successfully getting him for is the cost of the TB tests, which, again, are relatively cheap.

73. If anyone who was exposed to this very rare strain of TB from him
ends up getting it, they could sue him for a lot more than the cost of the tests.

If he knowingly traveled -- against medical advice, as the CDC insists -- and infected other people, then he could be held liable for damages.

90. And hopefully that means he didn't manage to infect anyone through
his negligence and willful failure to follow medical advice.

But in the (hopefully unlikely) event he DID infect someone, that person could have a much poorer immune system and could easily infect dozens or even hundreds of others.

One of my relatives got infected with regular TB from someone who was supposed to NOT be contagious, and so did several other kids in the class. So we've learned the hard way -- 9 months of treatment.

54. Since TB is airborne,
I don't think there is any extra danger in shaking hands.

60. TB is not transmitted by hand shaking.
Just heard it verified on TV.

99. Correct
TB is spread by airborne droplets of sputum (snot/spit) that are then inhaled. Because of this method of transmission, there's a pretty low risk anyone else on the plane contracted it. He wasn't coughing, felt fine, etc. Also consider that he was around his wife-to-be more than anyone else, and she's wearing a mask because she doesn't have it.

None of that, of course, excuses his flying back once he knew what it was he really had. At that point, he should have contacted an American embassy and arranged a secure flight back. I do see how he thought he was play when he initially left, but to return knowing it was worse than previously thought is just inexcusable- symptoms or not.

A woman I work with recently tested positive for TB. I didn't even bother getting tested for it because we were all told she worked in a completely different area of the plant, and we would have to be within six to eight feet of her for long periods to have a real chance of infection. When they tested everyone around her, nobody else came up positive.

Oh, this was in a postal plant, by the way. Nobody even heard about it outside the plant, except for the families of the people who worked there, who I'm sure the employees informed. Everyone in charge, while taking it seriously, seemed rather unconcerned that there was ever a danger to anyone else.

67. I don't understand this whole thing. If this guy is SOOO contagious,
how come he was allowed to wander the streets every day and noone seemed to have a problem with that, but let him on an airplane and they're searching for everyone that was on those flights. All of a sudden, he gets back to Atlanta and he's put in quaranteen? What's wrong with this whole picture????

69. He is NOT so contagious.
The articles stress that he is not likely to be highly contagious, because he isn't coughing, has no fever, and his viral level is currently low.

The problem is that the particular strain is so deadly. Even though the risk of getting it from him is probably low, if someone catches it the risk of death is very high.

Why were they letting him walk around with this before? Because they didn't know he had this deadly strain.

72. OK, so if he is NOT highly contagious, why are they searching for
the other passengers on the flights he took? Someone on TV the other day said this disease was able to spread via touch, and even breathing. What am I supposed to believe here?

75. The disease is airborne.
It spreads when the diseased talks, coughs, etc.
The disease it's not highly contagious but it's extremely deadly, and that is why they are searching for other passengers.

80. Even when a TB patient is not thought to be highly contagious,
they still seek to warn contacts. This happened to one of my relatives, and she actually did get TB that way. (And was fully treated.)

But it's even more urgent in this case than usual because the strain is so deadly. And the NEXT person who catches it could be highly contagious, depending on his or her immune system.

84. The problem as I see let's say they test his contacts, and
find out someone is infected. What are they going to do then?
There is no cure.
What can they offer these people in case they do test positive?

91. It's not quite that dire, but it's pretty bad.
I read somewhere that there are some drugs that they're going to be giving this man. If the drugs don't work, then they are going to try surgery on his lung.

But even if they couldn't offer any treatment, they would still have to isolate him -- they can't take a chance on this deadly strain getting loose in the general population. He appears to be at low risk of being contagious right now -- but the next person who is infected, depending on the person's immune system, could be highly contagious and infect huge numbers of people.

100. Your chance of becoming infected depends on your total acquired load...
Your chance of becoming infected depends on your total
acquired load of the tuberculosis "mycobacterium".

Pass him on the street and your total acquired load
will be low. Spend time sitting next to him on the
subway, and you'll get more bacteria. Sit next to him
for ten hours breathing the crappy recirculated air
on the plane and you'll have an excellent chance to
acquire whatever he's spreading.

The good news is that he's apparently not spreading
much; his sputum samples have apparently been negative
for the TB bacterium.

(But his "MLAT (Major League Asshole Test) definitely
came back "positive".)

68. This from almost 2 months ago:
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/04/06/142246&mode=thread&tid=25

27-year-old Robert Daniels is being held against his will in a Phoenix hospital ward reserved for sick prisoners. If state officials have their way, he could be there for the rest of his life. Daniels is suffering from a deadly strain of tuberculosis known as XDR-TB. Doctors say he is virtually untreatable. He has been forced to live in a hospital cell in complete isolation.
Daniels contracted the disease while living in Russia. He returned to the United States last year and agreed to a voluntary quarantine in residential care. But Daniels violated his agreement when he went outside without a mask. Daniels says he misunderstood how much of a health risk he posed, in part because he hadn't been forced to wear a mask in Russia.

Today, Daniels has been forced to live in a hospital cell in complete isolation. His only visitors are medical staff. Sheriff's deputies have taken away his television, radio, phone and computer. He is under 24-hour surveillance and the light in his room is never turned off, even at night. His only contact to the outside world is a pay-phone. Daniels recently described his ordeal in a phone interview with the Arizona radio station KJZZ.

Is this the same strain of TB? I have no idea but it looks like there are similarities in these cases.

Is this current 'patient' allowed TV, radio, phones, and computers? I this current gentleman blinded 24/7 by bright lights? This gentleman is not!!!!

I only ask since the two situations are somewhat 'similar'.

equipment away from this patient? Unless they're worried that he'll use it to escape?

Total quarantine with no communication, lights on 24/7 (like at Gitmo)

The laywer dude isn't the first to be quarantined for these 'super-strains' of tuberculosis.
