AFA and NY Post totally misrepresent Pew Survey
Edited on Thu May-31-07 07:04 PM by FLDem5
(First, read our email to let you know how you are supposed to answer. little sheep)

26% of young U.S. Muslims say violence OK

Are the mainstream media giving the public an accurate view of radical Islam? Take our poll.

According to a new poll by the New York Post, one of four young Muslims in the U.S. believe suicide bombings against innocent civilians are OK. The nationwide survey, one of the most exhaustive ever conducted of American Muslim attitudes, found that more than 60% are very concerned Islamic extremism will grow in America. There are an estimated 2.35 million Muslims in the U.S.

Thirteen percent said suicide bombings and other violence against civilians can be justified “in order to defend Islam from its enemies.” Among those under the age of 30, that 13% doubled to 26%.

:silly:

They quote this NY POST article which ends with the ominous message: "Clearly, the nation can neglect the challenges this poll presents only at its peril." The article seems to get its information from a Pew Research poll. I ventured over to their website - and indeed the Featured Poll is about Muslims. However, the data seems to support that Muslim Americans are Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream , which, by the way, is the TITLE of the fucking poll. In fact, the only thing I could find to support their idiocy is this little blurb:

Muslim Americans reject Islamic extremism by larger margins than do Muslim minorities in Western European countries. However, there is somewhat more acceptance of Islamic extremism in some segments of the U.S. Muslim public than others. Fewer native-born African American Muslims than others completely condemn al Qaeda. In addition, younger Muslims in the U.S. are much more likely than older Muslim Americans to say that suicide bombing in the defense of Islam can be at least sometimes justified. Nonetheless, absolute levels of support for Islamic extremism among Muslim Americans are quite low, especially when compared with Muslims around the world.

2. It's a silly slanted poll
The questions are drivel, along the lines of Groucho Marx's famous, "Have you stopped beating your wife?" joke from his movies.

appease, radical Muslims, radical Islam, etc.

5. Washington Slimes did a similar biased article -- my post re that:

Unfortunately, even in the report, the answers "often" and "sometimes" are conflated. Still, it's clear that only among a certain age cohort is it at all common to express support for suicide bombers. And frankly, no one should get excited about numbers down in the 2-3% range, because that's below the margin of error of the poll (5% at 95% confidence)! Pick a sample of ANY group of people in a random poll, and ask "How many are just plain nuts?" and you'll get numbers higher than that, even when the answers are voluntary.

The WORST news out of this poll -- and the one that the Moonie Editorial Board chooses to regard as the only important news -- is that a substantial number of younger Muslims in America consider suicide bombings for the cause of Islam to be justified, at least sometimes, including "rarely". Given that about 28% of Americans consider it perfectly acceptable, even mandatory, to bomb people into bloody bits just for being Muslim, I can only say I am a little surprised it is that low.

One last thing I learned from reviewing this survey: I deeply regret that * is a bloody mass murderer, but still not a suicide bomber.
