Wal-Mart Shareholders to Weigh In on Executive Pay

Companies:Wal-Mart Stores IncBy AP | 01 Jun 2007 | 09:18 AM ET Font size: Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, holds its annual shareholders meeting on Friday, with a number of proposals up for voting.

Shareholders are asking for an advisory vote on executive pay and pay-for-performance.

Advisory firm Glass Lewis & Co. recommended shareholders vote against a proposal implementing a pay-for-performance standard for senior executives.

(how many of you have your incentive tied to your performance?) Why shouldn’t the executives.

The firm said, as a general rule, that shareholders shouldn't be involved in setting the details of executive compensation, and believes the issue is best left to the board's compensation committee.

1. Benchmarks just embolden the enemy
Why should CEOs have to prove that they did anything to improve the company's value?

For god's sake, just let them get to the golf course on time and everything will be okay....

drape a banner across my building with something like 'Welcome Wal-Mart Shareholders! Getting piles of junk from Chinese slavery!"

3. In the best of all possible worlds, I might agree with that...
...if for no other reason than the thought that practical effect of such a policy would be to exacerbate the very destructive policies that we would like Wally World to STOP practicing.

However, this world is not that world. It's tough to see where WM can get worse, and much to gain by taking executive compensation out of the hands of broken system that currently determines it.

4. I've been hoping for YEARS that the stockholders would revolt
AGAINST the obscene GREED of the CORP. execs! IMO, THEY are the ONLY people who can ever change this insanity! These execs are mandated by LAW to support the interests of their stockholders! I really HOPE this will be the first MAJOR Corp. to be forced to concede to the demands of their stockholders. Maybe then the completely out of balance pay structures in our Country will change!
