BAGHDAD -- An Iraqi police chief praised by U.S. forces for clearing his city of insurgents has been arrested.

The U.S. military said the arrest of the Sunni official follows an investigation into alleged murder, corruption and crimes against the Iraqi people.

According to a statement from Multinational Corps-Iraq, the police chief, Col. Hamid Ibrahim al-Jazaa, his brother and 14 bodyguards were taken into custody in the city of Hit, 85 miles west of Baghdad. The statement says all of the accused are currently being held by coalition forces.
