Gore Moving Up In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Leads Obama Among Dems, Runs Best Against Giuliani

MAY 31, 2007

Former Vice President Al Gore, who has not declared his candidacy for the 2008 presidential nomination, runs better in Pennsylvania than any Democrat against the Republican front runner, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani: Gore has 45 percent to Giuliani's 44 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Giuliani leads New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 47 - 43 percent and tops Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 45 - 40 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In other possible presidential matchups in Pennsylvania:
Clinton edges Arizona Sen. John McCain 45 - 43 percent;
Clinton tops former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 50 - 36 percent;
McCain gets 42 percent to 41 percent for Obama;
McCain ties Gore 44 - 44 percent;
Obama beats Thompson 47 - 32 percent;
Gore beats Thompson 50 - 35 percent.

Sen. Clinton gets 33 percent of Democratic primary voters, with 16 percent for Gore, 13 percent for Obama and 11 percent for Edwards. This compares to a March 29 poll showing 36 percent for Clinton, 17 percent for Obama, 13 percent for Gore, and 9 percent for Edwards. "While it's still Sen. Clinton and Mayor Giuliani at the top of the presidential race, Vice President Gore is getting stronger and Sen. McCain weaker in the latest Pennsylvania poll," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. .......

3. Same question could be asked

about those who have declared their candidacy but don't have a chance in hell of winning the general election. This is especially true of some candidates who have run in multiple elections and repeatedly received only scant support.

Never mind the fact that I think there is a fairly significant portion of he population - at least in certain areas of the country - that expects Gore to become a candidate. Be interesting to see some polling on this issue.

edit for spelling

9. It's nice in that he's "running" without having to deal with the crap.
He's a candidate that people actually seem to want, and want very much indeed.

It's odd, isn't it?

A candidate that people are actually drafting, rather than having him thrust upon them.

10. "without having to deal with the crap". Precisely! No reason for him to decide right now. It's still
very early!! He can take his time to make his decision. I really think he will decide to run! :toast:

2. I hope Gore is reading these polls and realizes how much
people want (and need) him to run. He won before, and this time, he would win in a landslide. The northeast, the midwest, the mountain states, the west coast would all be solid for him. And I predict he would carry Tennessee (which now has a popular Democratic governor) against even a Fred Thompson.

5. winning PA by 1-point makes a key Blue state a toss up
I think Gore won it by a much bigger margin in 2000.

4. Let's hope Rudy is not the nominee if we can't carry PA in '08 it's all over
and even Gore's insignificant 1-point "lead" is hardly reassuring.

7. You're Missing The Point...
He's not even running, and he's polling ahead by 1 point.

If he announced in a few months, and started campaigning, I have little doubt that # would expand by 5-10 points.
