O'Reilly thinks he is "Part of the white, male Christian power structure" in the US
Edited on Fri Jun-01-07 11:06 AM by A HERETIC I AM
The arrogance and ego of this man is simply astounding. The exchange in the video linked below was mentioned in another thread the other day but i don't think any mention of Billo's claim was made. About 30 or 40 seconds into the piece with McCain, he says "But do you understand what the New York Times wants, and the far-left want? They want to break down the white, Christian, male power structure, which you're a part, and so am I"
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/05/31/bill-oreilly-the-white-christian-male-power-structure-is-in-jeopardy/

Yes, Bill is in charge and his influence is utter and complete. (In case you had yet to notice)

Another interesting thing of late - His new "Rosie" is the Boulder High School. Interesting that the students themselves are calling him on his bullshit interpretation of a school meeting he obviously knows nothing about. Rather, he knows just enough about to make him look like a total asshole, yet again.

Check out this link from Newshounds;
http://www.newshounds.us/2007/05/31/boulder_high_school_students_join_forces_to_demand_an_apology_from_bill_oreilly.php

Bill O'Reilly: "I am the arbiter of all that is good and decent in this country. Quick, do what i say as my flash in the pan will be over soon."

on edit to actually add the link i mentioned! DOH!

1. How is he not? He is white and male (obviously), the guy is extremely rich,
he has nationally syndicated radio and television shows that air daily on which he reinforces that very position (conservative white christian male), has put out several bestselling books, and basically tells millions of like-minded idiots how to think.

9. How is he not? How many people does he employ? What's his net worth? How big is the company he
started?

I can list quite a few white, male christians who actually employ hundreds if not thousands, are the heads of large companies they started and have a personal balance sheet that would allow them to buy and sell the pissant Billo with pocket change.

He isnt part of the white male power structure in this country. He is an asshole with a tv show and a radio show.

16. Of course i see the influence.
I am not ignorant of the fact that he has an audience. But really, thats all he has: an audience

He is not a policy maker. He is not an elected official. He is not the head of a major company that has a direct effect on the well being of others. Don't confuse influence with effect.

"you obviously have your own issues you can't get past."

Yes. Quite. I have the uncomfortable tendency to call bullshit when i see it. I also refuse to concede influence to someone who demands it when it isnt deserved.

I am curious of your statement. Is it your position that i should just admit that Billo is this huge, important American on whose next brilliant thought or profound word i should eagerly await?

Sorry. Not me.

13. he doesn't have to employ any
but he is the mouthpiece to millions from some very powerful people, such as Rupert Murdoch. How does this make him not one of said racist, sexist power structure?

And this is a country of 300 million.

21. I could be wrong, but were the last few presidential elections
decided by far fewer than 10 million votes? The last election had 122,293,332 votes count. I'd say 8% is a decent chunk of people.

I'm sorry, but even if he is just a pawn (which he is) he's still a pawn that has power by propping up the power of his side.

26. Wouldnt you agree that he pretty much preaches to the choir?
I think his audience has, for the most part made up its mind. I just don't think he has that much sway over the undecided. I think he has virtually no sway over anyone with a brain.

27. I would agree with that statement wholeheartedly
as a matter of fact, that is his job - to reinforce old ideas. I would say his audience, almost by definition, resists new ideas. But that position is still an important part of the machine. The Right Wing would not be where they are today without the well-framed and well-timed propaganda. Obviously, Rush Limbaugh deserves more of the "credit" for this than any other, but they all play their part.

Trust me, I am not trying to build him up to be anything special because he's not, but he's still a part of the reason the people in charge are in charge. He speaks to the threatened and "victimized" White Males and allows them to rationalize their bigotry.

2. Interesting to see him come right out and say it.
Historically, these blowhards get by on misdirection. Certainly, never by actually naming the power structure they are defending. I can only hope that many many women, non-whites and non-christians get to see this too.

when responding to a write-in viewer. (the usual rant about how nobody owes anyone anything. If there's anything LESS Christian than that particular comment, I'd love to know about it. )

...why, now that you mention it, Mr. O'Reilly, why yes we do.

It's not *because* it's white, or (faux) Christian, or male; it's because it's really f***ed up and hurting this country and the world.

20. One other thing. Can any of you imagine David Brinkley or Walter Cronkite ever saying such a thing?
Those two men, in their heyday most certainly had more sway over public opinion than this moron could ever hope to have.

Would Roger Mudd have ever said that? Or Chet Huntley? Or Fred Friendly? Or virtually any respectable TV news person in the last 50 years?

The answer the way i see it is a resounding NO! Primarily because Billo is not respectable.

22. I agree with you here
I wasn't trying to say Bill-O is a great person, or that he is where he is because he deserves to be, but he has his place in the propaganda machine for sure. If anything, it is even more insidious that people like him and Limbaugh pretend to be average joe centrists when it's painfully obvious they are anything but.
