NRCAT co-sponsors "Day of Action to Restore Law and Justice"
Tuesday, June 26, 2007

You are invited to come to Washington, DC on Tuesday, June 26 for an event which provides people of faith an opportunity to say “NO” to U.S.-sponsored torture.

NRCAT is joining the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, and the Leadership Council on Civil Rights to sponsor a rally and lobby-day called, "Day of Action to Restore Law and Justice," in Washington, DC, on June 26, 2007. The goal of the event is to end torture and secret prisons, to restore due process and fairness to our treatment of detainees, and to reform the abuses of the Military Commissions Act by enacting the Restoring the Constitution Act.

More than 2,000 people will gather for an 11:30 a.m. rally on Capitol Hill, and four of NRCAT’s senior religious leaders will be among the speakers at the event. We anticipate a strong turnout by the press. In the afternoon, those attending will lobby their Members of Congress. Download a flyer for the rally.

This is an important NRCAT project, and we hope that you and your friends will be able to join us. In particular we ask you to do the following:

    1. Attend the rally at 11:30 a.m. in Upper Senate Park on Capitol Hill (Delaware and Constitution Avenue). Free bus transportation is being offered by the ACLU from certain points along the East Coast and from several cities in the Midwest. (Go to www.juneaction.org, if you want to reserve a seat on a bus.)

    2. Meet with your U.S. senators and representative between 2:00 and 5:00 PM. You will need to make your own appointments but NRCAT will have materials available at the rally for you to use for these visit, and there will be a lobby training session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. near the site of the rally on Capitol Hill, as well. The materials will also be posted on our website. If you don't know the phone number of your members of Congress, you can call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121, and they will connect you. Tell the member's office that you want to make an appointment to meet with someone on the staff about U.S. sponsored torture and the Military Commissions Act.

    3. Register online with NRCAT if you are able to attend the Day of Action. We will keep those who register informed of any developments.

    4. If you are unable to come to Washington that day, organize a delegation of people of faith to visit the staff of your members of Congress in their district offices. You can download materials for the meeting from our website. If you have a meeting, issue a press release before the visits to tell the press about the purpose of your visits. If you are unable to organize a visit, call your members of Congress on June 26th and ask them to cosponsor the Restoring the Constitution Act. You can get their phone numbers from the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121.
