1. I'm frequently reminded of the "3 little pigs."
People do stupid and or foolhardy things- like build or purchase houses (or trailers) that are woefully deficient based on the known risks.

And they'll keep doing so- irrespective of the lessons they ought to have learned from a simple nursery rhyme, unless there are responsible land use ordinances and building codes in place.

5. The Oregon coast has hurricane force winds every year!
almost without fail- and yet, while tress blow down, by in large houses don't get blown apart.

However- there's still a significant amount of unreinforced masonry -which will come down in a major quake.

6. There is a difference between wind resistant and hurricane proof.
Katrina should have taught everyone that the worst damage comes with the water, not the wind.

My sister boasted to me about how she bought windows that were tested by firing a 2X4 at them. I want to know; what happens when a. The second 2X4 hits the window or b. a 2X12 hits?

7. I went thru Hurricane Andrew in South Fla!!!
Our condo was brand new and poured concrete. We didn't so much as lose an awning. 2 doors down another of the same design looked like it had been nuked. It was flying debris that did the damage. A friend worked in warehouse, so we parked all of our cars in there. It survived, but there was a 60' palm tree laying across the spot where my Acura would have been!

Hurricane-proof is alot like 'military intellegence' or 'jumbo shrimp.'
