Singapore PM warns of China-US cold war
By Graeme Dobell

Singapore has told a meeting of Asian defence ministers that there is a danger of a new cold war breaking out between China and the United States.

The Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, told a summit of Asia-Pacific defence ministers that anti-China feeling is rising in the US. Congress is hostile to China because of the trade deficit and the Bush Administration is under pressure to act tough.

"It will lead not just to more protectionism, but also friction and recrimination that will sour the broader relationship between the two countries and increase the risks of a cold war," he said.

Mr Lee says a China-US confrontation would harm the global trading system and Asia's economic future.

Yeah, don't harm the global trading system and Asia's economic future. Keep stealing jobs and shipping poisonous crap.

1. Doubtful
The ocean of money flowing from the US to China would make that scenario unlikely. The American corporate collusion with Chinese despots isn't going to end with our election systems awash in corporate money. The second reason that is unlikely is that our economies are so intertwined that it is hard to imagine how that war would be waged without severely affecting both parties.

2. What we started with is hypocriy and we sre still stuck with it.
The right wing has yelled COMMIE at every opportunity and during the 90's conducted a campaign against the Chinese tying in phony claims about theft and crime by individuals and Dems.

The right wing has not so quietly allowed corporations to work out the best deals for them with the Chinese.

The right wing has allowed China to become our creditor.

The right wing foments hate for Mexicans, but allowS the Chhinese to run some of our ports.

The right wing government departments look the other way about all the imports and exports.
