Police Say Man Robbed Bank To Get Jail Healthcare

Rafer Weigel
Reporting

snip...
Police say a 70 year-old Oroville man named Ale Embry went inside a Bank of America and gave the teller a robbery note, only it was a bit confusing.

"The note was not grammatically correct and the teller questioned him about it, so he told her want he wanted," said Lt. Nickelson.

The teller, sensing something odd, told her supervisor who called 911. Embry walked out, and into police custody, which turns out what he wanted all along.

"In fact, he wanted to get arrested. He told us he had some significant health issues, and he thought that was the best way to get them handled," said Brown.

3. I used to know a guy...
...who deliberately left his parking tickets unpaid so that when he was finally arrested, he got healthcare while in jail free of charge.

He had a small business of his own (a pub), but cashflow was always a problem, and he frequently had to do without a lot of things many of us take for granted. And health insurance? Please.

8. This is nothing new.

A lot of homeless people will do something petty to get arrested, just to get food and shelter for a night. This is just a new angle to it.

13. Way back in the 50s the cops arrested some kids for throwing rocks through store windows
One of the cops asked why they did it, and one kid said "We heard that juvenile delinquents get sent to a school where you learn how to make things."

9. Very reminiscent of "The Cop And The Anthem" by O. Henry, a short story
where the protagonist, Soapy, does everything he can think of to get arrested at the cusp of winter in order to have adequate (and affordable) shelter for the season. He fails until the end of the story where he reconsiders his lot, is ready to go "straight" -- and gets arrested for loitering.
