We have lost Steve Gilliard! |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 04:04 PM by tblue37
One of my very favorite bloggers, Steve Gilliard, had died. I hope his friends plan to keep his blog running, so we can continue to read his brilliant analyses and commentary.
If any of you are among the team that kept Steve's blog going during his time in the hospital, please let us know. I can't bear to think of losing that wonderful community of voices, too.

3. When a family member asked Jen to stop posting updates, I was |
|
hoping that the next time I heard about Gilly it would be because he was well enough to post something himself. After Jen's last post concerning setbacks in his recovery, we were afraid, but I don't think any of us can really believe we have lost him so soon. He was only 41 years old!

4. That's very sad news.....I've been reading his blog for a couple of years |

Edited on Sat Jun-02-07 04:09 PM by Old and In the Way
He did great original content on the Iraq war...he had keen insight on the geo-politics and military aspects of this war. I suspected that he was failing when Jen advised that the family had requested on more updates on his condition.
He will be missed.

5. I Will Be A Lesser Man Without Him |
|
During all the "USA, ALL THE WAY!" bullshit during the first parts of the Eye-Rack war, Gilliard was the few voices of reason that I relied on, both when he was a Daily Kos "frontpager" and when he had his own blog. Why must me lose people like him when we need them the most?

8. Damn. I thought he was pulling through, last time I visited his blog, |
|
a few weeks ago.
I'm going to miss his rants. He would warn us beforehand with "Incivility Alert - Incivility Alert".
Rest in peace, Steve. I wish I could've met you in person.

9. That's too bad. I'm not surprised, he was in bad shape, but he'll be missed |
|
He most certainly did have brilliant analysis that I greatly respected. And, he gave a damn. You can't say that about everyone.

I was just thinking of him this afternoon, walking by the snail mail address he used, and hoping he was alright and dreading the possibility that he wasn't. He was one of my daily reads. I learned so much from him during the transit strike and counted on him for discussions about the military, NYC politics, good food and race relations. I'll miss his anger and wit. Since he first went into the hospital I've been wanting to hear his take on so many things that have happened while he was sick. I posted to his comments only and not all that often. I hope Jen keeps some presence on the web, as well as Steve's archives. Damn! In Steve's honor (although I'm pretty indifferent to baseball); FUCK THE FUCKING YANKEES! Goodbye Steve
Edit: I just heard from a friend that another friend of mine died of cancer this afternoon. Damn.

comments or guest blogs again? Or Hubris Sonic, marx and lenin, Gracchus, blksister, and the other familiar voices? I sure hope we can find those voices together again. Maybe Jen will keep The News Blog up, as an ongoing tribute to Steve's memory and the causes he fought for.

in response to Sara's remembrance of Steve (and Lower Manhattanite as well) so perhaps they will let us know there where they prefer to post.

27. I went there and saw that--and posted there myself for the first time. |

I have been a regular on Steve's blog for years, and I used to post regularly at Smirking Chimp (before coming to DU in the summer of 2004), but DU and Steve's blog are the only places I have been posting for several years.
Of course, "Sarah" on Orcinus is "Mrs. Robinson" from Steve's blog, another regular from his blog that I have always enjoyed reading comemtns from.

30. Yes, but I also don't like the changes in SC. |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 10:46 PM by tblue37
I didn't like that my fvorite posters were driven away (Kwadwo) or banned (shadowthief) for daring to express perfectly reasonable opinions. I hated those endless omnibus threads. Sure, too many threads on the same topic are annoying, but sometimes different angles of a topic do deserve to be discussed in separate threads, but that ws no longer allowed at all. Trying to discuss different angles became like digging through a huge pile of loose papers to find one sentence on one page.
I also hate the new format there. Prior to the changed format, SC's format and its look were my favorites of all the ones I visited, but now I just don't like it at all. Also, it is harder to navigate than it used to be.
Did you have the same name at SC? (I did.)

16. I hope that Steve's friends and family will publish a compilation of his work. |
|
I would buy it in an instant. He was well loved. No doubt the family is left with huge medical bills. If anyone hears of a donation drive, please pass the word along--and if his family decide to publish a compilation of his work, I think they will be surprised at ho many of us would jump at the chance to buy it.

26. I am very saddened to hear this |
|
I was a frequent reader of Steve Gilliard's blog last year and I greatly and profoundly admired his passion, his beautiful style of writing, his no-nonsense commentary on the state of affairs in the world and his commitment and dedication to the progressive cause. Steve was refreshingly forthright in putting forward his views and his opinions and the passion with which he held them always struck a deep chord with me and had me cheering him on. I profoundly admired and respected him and his writings and they helped me gain a new perspective on a range of issues
RIP Steve. The world will be the poorer for the loss of your eloquent, passionate and beautiful commentaries. My sincerest and deepest condolences, thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to Steve's family and friends. Thank you for making the world a better place Steve
