A veteran's frustration

By Rudi Keller ~ Southeast Missourian

snip//

Four times, he said, he gave paperwork to the VA clinic in Cape Girardeau. Each time, some or all of the documents were lost.

In the most recent attempt in mid-May, he said, he drove to Poplar Bluff to deliver the paperwork personally to the hospital. A call to check on his status revealed the hospital again doesn't have the papers.

Told he's not eligible

The VA has told him he's not eligible for benefits. "They said the injuries were not compensable or service-connected," McCanless said. When he asked why, he was told "because they could not get any paperwork from the Marines."

He rattles off a long list of physical injuries in addition to his psychological issues. Both legs and ankles were broken by stress fractures. He's had two concussions from being fired on in Iraq, a broken jaw, three broken ribs -- again from being struck by a bullet that did not penetrate his body armor -- and two herniated disks in his back. And he suffers from tinnitus, a ringing in the ears associated with exposure to loud noise.

The psychological issues really took hold as he was recovering from combat wounds, he said. "I felt extremely depressed," McCanless said. "I had lost a lot of friends, including some injured trying to protect me after I was wounded. I had to kill a 7-year-old girl holding a hand grenade because that is what I was ordered to do. It is something that just won't leave your mind, period."

5. My sincere condolences, az chela.
Your son was a true American hero. And his nation abandoned him during his time of need.

8. Great idea!
Hell, I feel like I should do something. Most of the people I know with those yellow ribbons would be too dense to get it, though. There is one exception: a friend of mine whose son serves in a combat zone. Her yellow ribbon is on a sub-compact.

7. K&R.
This makes me sick!

Who's looking out for our soldiers when they
come home?

Forty years after my brother returns from a tour in Vietnam,
IT'S THE SAME SHIT ALL OVER, AGAIN!!

Have we learned nothing?

I'm too angry to make sense right now.

What ‘Support Our Troops’ Entails

Published: June 3, 2007

Whenever and however American troops withdraw from Iraq, a flood of wounded and psychologically damaged veterans will present the nation for decades to come with costly needs that already are overwhelming government services.

The backlog of disability claims stands at more than 405,000, with cases averaging 177 days to be processed — almost twice the backlog for civilians. Experts estimate that an additional 400,000 claims will be filed in the next two years.

At the same time, better battlefield care is sending veterans home with severe brain traumas that might have been fatal in earlier wars. Complex new treatments are required for these survivors and for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and symptoms of depression that veterans groups fear are driving up suicide rates.

10. It took my son a year and a damn good lawyer
to get his disability.Trust ne when I tell you that this happens all the tine at the VA.When my son died they refused to send me his medical file and I called their lawyer and told them they had 3 days to get all his medical records in the mail to me or I would contact my lawyer so they sent them out the next day. They keep the vets drugged up all the time and hope they OD.
They actually gave my son so much morphine one time that he couldnt move or talk.Like I said this went on for several years. He had pneumonia and they wouldnt take care of him and so he threw several clots and his foot turned black and by the time they decided to look at it they sent him in an ambulance to the regular hospital here where the Dr said he didnt think he could save his life, rigamortis had set in and his foot was black and the Dr did a 6 hr surgury and then he was in ICU til he could be moved and the Va sent him to the VA hospital in Tucson and they amputated his foot there as they wouldnt pay the hospital and DR here to do it.Then he had 5 more surguries and was in chronic pain and was in a wheel chair for the rest of his life til the VA gave him too much methadone and he died. They said it was an accidental overdose.I think he just gave up and didnt want to live anymore. That was almost 4 years ago and we were so close and I now have chronic depression because I miss him so much but I am glad his pain and suffering are over.I HATE THE VA
and the government!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

12. Thank you BabylonSister. You have just said it all for me. GD'd It and GD'd it some more.
When, just when are we really going to stand up and truly "support our soldiers"?

Not until there is a draft and I have a daughter draft age. I

Thank you again and then some for screaming from the rooftop of DU, in capital letters. That is how you yell in cyberspace, right?
