Poll question: What Do You Think of "Lionel"
I've been trying to be open minded about "Lionel". What do you think of his talk show?

34. He makes me think of a smart alek kid with a chip on his sholder.
I generally like him, particularly when he takes a conservative to task. I think he can sound a little whiny at times. Overall, I think he adds an informed voice to the conversation.

This seems like a gross error.

19. Yeah, for the amount of money they risked,
they didn't seem to have a plan.

In New York, I don't even tune into the "flagship" station till 3PM when Randi comes on. They have SIX HOURS A DAY on WWRL of paid Republican shill Armstrong Williams, and also Fox shill, Dickless Alan Colmes. I have to stream at www.theyoungturks.com. That's a disgrace.

I won't kick a nickel in till there's something to listen to in the daytime.

10. I know his voice drives many crazy..... but to me...
Lionel's voice has some similarities with Ben Mankiewicz from the Young Turks, and I don't find Ben's hard to take at all. SO, I'm suspecting it is Lionel and what he says, his often overwhelming arrogance, that makes his voice "so annoying" to so many. I really hate it when he mocks his callers--not RWers but earnest average listeners.

Lionel clearly needs to make himself seem "mentally" superior... I think that is why so many really loved Sam Seder (and Thom Hartman, Rachel Maddow, David Bender, etc.) They always give the caller benefit of the doubt and are respectful (until it becomes clear they are just RW disruptors). Lionel doesn't care if they are lib/progressives and are making points he totally agrees with. His need is to make someone look stupid, and by extension, I suppose, make himself look "smarter." :eyes: He is smarmy, IMO and has no business being on AAR.

16. He did a bit the other day that was brilliant. He had on this wingnut from a site
called "What are we fighting for?" (http://www.whatarewefightingfor.com/). The guy was a complete nutjob who talked about "Re-Americanizing" America — and Lionel lured him in...and just when the guy was lulled into feeling comfortable, Lionel had Liberals call in and ask this guy questions, for which the guy had NO answers at all. Many of the callers were veterans, so I think Lionel had them lined up for this bit. It was devastating.

25. Air America made a really big mistake.
While Sam Seder was good but didn't have the following, maybe because he wasn't known all that well, Thom Hartman would have been great in that spot. What bugs me is XM puts Ed Schultz in Thom Hartman's noon to 3PM time slot and Ed is definitely no Thom Hartman.

Randi is the only one left of the original line-up, although Rachel Maddow is still around.

All in all I liked the first format they had when they first started.

26. AAR never did squat to promote Sam Seder...
It slays me to hear the Lionel is one word like "God" promotions, that are not only offensive on their face, but are using AAR dollars to promote him! Where was that promotional campaign for Sam? Yet, they justify dumping Sam Seder by saying he wasn't building market among the affiliates! Shit, shit, shit, I so hate it when Lib/Progressives try to imitate the RW...

28. My local AAR promotes the hell of out Sam
even though he's just on weekends now :-(

I haven't heard this Lionel guy, and will not. The last AAR host my local plays is Rachel Maddow on 2-hour delay, from 7-9pm. Randi is on from 9-12am, then Malloy on from 12-3am. So I don't get whoever is on after Rachel. Jon Elliot I think is one, and 'Lionel' is the other one.

I get Mark Riley, Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, and Ed Schultz in the morning, live, then Thom and the local liberal radio show "Minnesota Matters". I listen at night, when I'm at work, so I usually catch it from 3pm to 3am every day.

29. Good for the Minnesota affiliate...
Sadly, many affiliates never carried Sam's morning show from the first and weren't encouraged to do so via any AAR (national) promotion... So, in the typical circular reasoning, AAR decided "Sam wasn't carrying his weight..." :eyes:

27. So, after excluding those who have never heard his show...
27/37 in this poll indicate very negative impressions = 73%.... Hmmm.

I wonder if the Greens are getting this kind of feedback. Perhaps the OP might want to forward the poll and link findings on to them...If nothing else, perhaps they could deal with his behavior towards callers--his rude mockery--even if they choose to continue his show.

36. Lionel is not terrible, but he is far from great...
and Sam Seder is great. Sam Seder has been doing some of the best political analysis (and political comedy) in any media format.

I figured out what the Lionel "factor" is, and where Sam Seder is supposedly lacking: Lionel has an oily "radio voice" whereas Sam Seder talks like a regular person. Sam Seder doesn't have a disk jockey's delivery. That is the meaning behind the code word "entertaining" (The dig against Seder is that he isn't supposedly "entertaining" enough). This is radio-speak for "disk-jockey voice". Lionel has a disk jockey voice.

Lionel isn't topical enough. Cover the damn news, PLEASE !!!!!! Don't do "thematic" shows ("Religion: positive force in today's world?") when there is a TON of hard news to discuss. Even if you did the hard news every show, every day, you wouldn't run out of topics!!!!

Lionel is slightly annoying with his arch sense of humor and dry wit. He clearly has a glowing opinion of himself, and looks down on the callers. Here's a hint, Lionel: Get better call screeners. If the screeners think they have a dumb caller, don't put them on the air. Don't put dumb people on the air, just so you can feign superority.

AAR is in a world of trouble now, IMO. And I hate to be mean, but Mark Green lost a mayoral election to a Republican, in New York City where the Dems outnumber the Republicans 3 to 2. Mark Green's track record sucks. I'll be glad if Air America Radio even survives.
