Clinton couldn't be Truman
I really wish we could end one of the biggest myths about Don't Ask Don't Tell. Clinton is often compared unfavorably to Truman who desegregated the Armed Services. Truman was able to desegregate the Armed Services with a stroke of the pen because segregation was by tradition and by executive action and not by law. Gays couldn't be put into the services by a stoke of a pen because sodomy is a crime under the Uniform Code of Justice. Laws can't be changed, in this country, by executive fiat. We don't elect dictators but Presidents. I am glad that our candidates all agree Don't Ask Don't Tell should be eliminated. But it will take Congress.
