Barnes & Noble and Al Gore's 'Assault on Reason'
Today I went to BN to check things out. I looked everywhere in the new releases nonfiction for Al Gore's new book. Couldn't find it. So off I went into the Social Studies section and found ONE copy of the book, marked 20% off.

Is BN pursuing an agenda here? Or is the public really more interested in reading the latest Dinesh D'Souza and Billow Reilly falafel-fest?

I thought Gore's book would have been a massive success. Anyone have sales figures?

2. It's debuting at #1 on the NY Times Best Seller list. Maybe there was only one
because all the rest are sold.

5. Did you look in the New Releases section?
Or the Bestsellers section?

I swear, people here have never been in a bookstore before.

10. There's another thread on something like this....
If I want a brand new bestseller, I don't go to the "Social Studies" section. I go to the obvious place - the New Releases or Bestseller sections, which are usually very prominently displayed by the front entrance.

The notion that Barnes and Nobles has any interest in "hiding" this book is idiotic. They want to sell books - they don't care who wrote them, what's in them... they just want to sell books.

15. OK
so you found a copy in the Social studies section...

and then you found a prominent display, presumably in a very visible spot, showing many copies in the Bestseller's section.

And somehow B&N is trying to "hide" this book? The notion is nonsensical.

I bought mine at 20% off last week. But they had a whole big display going on in the front of the store. :hi:

9. Our B&N had at least 8 copies last night ...
on an end cap near the front of the store. It was right next to some copies of The Resgan Diaries which was good for a laugh. -tg

11. In a Barnes & Noble in Tucson today.....
it was prominently displayed in it's pretty white dustcover.

Along with other new releases, it was 20% off as were all the other books in the section.

13. I went through a Barnes and Noble yesterday and didn't see it either.
I already have it so I wasn't looking for it to buy but the B&N is at a mall. I parked outside its entrance and walked through it twice (in and out) and was looking for Gore's book near either of the entrances and the displays.

I didn't see it anywhere.

Let's just say that B&N is certainly not displaying a major new release in a prominent way AT ALL. It is definitely a book you would have to be searching for specifically.

Why? I don't know but it sucks.

It was in a very blue college town so it doesn't have to do with the location.

20. Our local Borders had 2 copies displayed...
...in a "not too obvious place" in the front of the store. Both had smudges on the dust jackets.

None were available in current events where you'd expect to find them.

My local bookseller sold completely out and has more coming very shortly.

Got it for $14.95, and didn't have to wait for it to get shipped and it was cheaper than Barnes and Noble would be, even with the discount card...

28. It was displayed fairly prominently at Borders in Ann Arbor....
And of the 15 or so people ahead of me in line, FIVE were clutching copies of "Assault on Reason." Granted, it's lefty, book-loving Ann Arbor, but five people buying the same book is impressive anywhere.
