Notice the framing of immigration regarding the jobs "they" take. |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 05:15 AM by SoCalDem
I watched the CNN show today "Money talk" (I think it's called)
Some of the jobs listed were so euphemistically framed, it was ridiculous..
one goodie was "entertainment, travel , & liesure"
What they were really talking about were: waitresses, busboys, dishwashers, hotel room cleaners, frycooks, bellhops, parking lot attendants..
Then they listed "agriculture"
these people are not "farming".. they are lettuce pickers, toxic chemical appliers, lawn mowers, leaf-blowers..

1. 'WE' can not allow a HUGE new work force to come into this country and destroy the wage rate........ |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 05:36 AM by Double T
and job market. It is all about providing corporate america with a lower wage work force. The welfare health care system that is already a budget busting burden, it will now become even more of a burden. It is time for the people of this nation to be kind to its own workers; the corporations, the government and now some of the American people are going to sellout what's left for the American worker. Pathetic!

5. This is an interesting perspective that I have not considered. Instead |
|
of shipping jobs offshore, bring the low wage workers on shore. Let them bear the brunt of travel expenses, make them pay an "immigrant tax" simply to be here, then give them a low wage back breaking job to do. After two years, throw them away and get new ones.
No wonder the republics are so adamant about not raising the minimum wage.

13. You are starting to see what is really going on here........... |
|
The more you understand about what is really in this immigration bill, I believe the less you will be for it. If the left wing and the right wing agree on 'something', scrutinize it very carefully, because 'something' isn't right!

6. I think our economy is in far greater immediate danger from all the |
|
well paying jobs like my husband's that have been shipped over to India and China. These jobs are in no danger of being taken by someone who sneaks across the border to pick lettuce or bus tables, yet they are disappearing faster than anyone can keep count.

8. That hurts middle class people more |
|
but working class people have been hurt by illegal immigration. Though I think it's somewhat overblown. At least where I live, I think NAFTA has hurt working people more.

15. Sorry. Didn't mean to imply that working people aren't being hurt. |
|
The construction jobs you listed are good examples of where they are being hurt. I was referring more to the economy as a whole. Those who love to ramp up the hysteria frequently refer to the damage illegals are doing to the economy and all the free government services they receive and both of those arguments are specious.
It is already against the law to hire people who are in this country illegally, but most talk of "fixing" the illegal problem focuses on rounding up the illegals and shipping them out rather than going after the companies who are hiring them. It is, however, completely legal and looked upon favorably by Wall Street to continue shipping high paying tech jobs to other countries.
And as far as illegals getting everything for free, that is wildly exaggerated. They do pay taxes on everything they purchase. Those who are using counterfeit SS cards are paying money into a system that they will be unable to use. If they are receiving welfare (?), then those who are processing their paperwork are not doing a very good job. Children getting free meals at school and families showing up at an emergency room when they are desperate is a miniscule expense compared to our bloated defense budget.

9. True.. The builders/contractors love the cheap undocumented workers |
|
because if one of them has an accident, there are no pesky workers' comp papers to fill out, and the worker will tend to his injury secretively, and of course once the wages are depressed, they are so low, that ONLY undocumented people even want them:(
Imagine if, instead of all the border patrol agents we have..they were cruising around building sites, and demanding that the BOSSES prove that their workers are "legal".. If the boss cannot prove they ARE, HE gets hauled off in cuffs..and does say...6 months mandatory in jail..
and for a 2nd offense?
The business itself is confiscated..and sold at auction,.

11. Combine the loss of the higher paying outsourced jobs with the loss of the lower paying jobs........ |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 08:01 AM by Double T
and 'WE' will have no jobs left for American workers. If you think worker's crossing the border are only picking lettuce and busing tables, guess again. Jobs in manufacturing, electrical trades, HVAC trades, construction trades, retail, transportation are all threatened, just to name a few. Further, the H1B visa program will further reduce the number of higher paid jobs available for educated American citizens. America is in serious trouble and 'WE' are about to give away what is left? I'm sorry! I just do not get it!!

12. That is a frustrating element of this story - the constant double talk |
|
And it's not really limited to one side; rather all sides seem to engage in in constantly. Those who favor the immigrant bill have to reassure that they are just as interested in protecting America from brown people and those who oppose it have to reassure that they despite their words and their actions they really aren't racist. Fair enough. I'm sure a lot of people aren't; but there are clearly people who are. Go listen to what talk radio is saying about the Immigration bill.

beliefs, sexual orientations and political affiliations; unfortunately there is nothing that 'WE' can be do about that.
