4. Not usually
but this issue seems to have energized young people in ways that I have never seen around here. I am astonished that kids in the US are so sleepy and indolent. Most of the people at our anti war protests are middle aged and older. Very few people in their teens and 20s. My 20 year old thinks it is futile. The globalization issue has got the young people angry and activated. This kind of courage and commitment may be what it takes to turn things around.

8. Oh bollocks - throwing bricks at policemen is not "courage and commitment"
It's adrenaline from a protester with nothing to say. He'll grow out of it, hopefully without injuring anyone in the process.

11. I think this kid is rare, even in Europe.
And, though rare, you can find people like him everywhere, including the US. Remember Seattle and Miami?

9. Our founders looked like nothing so much as fools with a brick when they stood against the British
or this fool standing against tanks with shopping bags.

There comes a point when you have to stand up and say No!

32. i have no problem with a shopping bag, or flowers or a sign or
any reasonable means of protest.
the black bloc people are just giving them justification for the violence and its a tactic destined to fail.

Citizens throwing stones at soldiers. Soldiers overreacting.

What's the difference?

17. While war criminals like Kissinger enjoy the silence at Bilderberg

http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=74750

Bilderberg confidential:

As Kissinger spoke, preparations for the Bilderberg gathering were going on at the Ritz Carlton, with heightened security in the vicinity. The police put up metal barriers around the hotel making sure no one gets close and a group of policemen were waiting in front of the Beşiktaş İnönü Stadium close to the hotel.

No one in the area seemed to know what was going on inside the Ritz Carlton.

A waiter from a nearby café, who refused to give his name, said he knew nothing about the meeting. A seasonal worker from Tokat, a central Anatolian city, working in the reconstruction of pavements just across the hotel said, businessmen were inside.

They came yesterday, said 44-year old Hüsamettin Çiftçi. I do not think that they will talk politics.

18. That photo can be taken many different ways but
Those black masked "protesters" that run around throwing bricks and destroying property are disrupters owned by the system, for the purpose of discrediting the protests. Note how at least a couple of the stormtroopers are aware of this and are holding back the others.

The photo was either a lucky shot or a staged photo-op that reveals a bit too much. It is a good shot regardless.

Do you have evidence? Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.

20. The "evidence" is that it's been happening since at least the 60s
and probably way earlier than that -- back to union busting days.

Tell me, just what kind of "evidence" would you expect and require for this type of thing?

24. So if a protest turns violent, then this indicates that the "system" is behind the protest?
I guess the Shah must have been behind the Islamic Revolution then.

29. Oh, aren't you just so clever?
You're getting on my last nerve. Nevertheless, I'll respond -- this time. But probably not much more. I don't get the feeling your heart is in this discussion, if you know what I mean.

This doesn't apply to all protests. It applies to those in the U.S. primarily (butnot exclusively, givent he WTO and G-8 type protests), BY LIBERAL TYPES (this is very important), esp. the young, and esp. for or against anything that threatens the power of the Power Structure.

Lefties aren't violent, which is a fact so self-evident that I have to ask myself why you're posing quetions that clearly indicate you don't seem to be aware of the FACT that Lefties aren't particularly violent.

Google Cointelpro and AIM (American Indian Movement), Black Panthers, MLK, Vietnam.

Labeling it as conspiracy theory does not make it untrue.

23. They are Anarchists and could be working for anyone....
They do distract from the protestors tying to get their message out though. Sad thing is...that without the anarchists the protests wouldn't get any attention at all. It's a Catch 22....:-(

25. The guy looks so dressed for battle. I used to get so pissed off with
police making a show at demonstrations..until I saw there were people there "ready for battle". What happened to the demonstrations I used to go to in the 1980s..where police presence was minimal and everyone was well behaved?

Nobody should be hurt at a demonstration. It should be a time of standing together to make the government notice. Not riots. Children should be there. It is an important time in the life of a Liberal. I always like the people who brought flowers and handed them out.
