William Jefferson Indicted On Corruption Charges
By Laura McGann - June 4, 2007, 2:29 PM

Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) has officially been indicted on racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering according to the Associated Press.

The indictment handed up Monday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, is more than an inch thick and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 200 years.

Almost two years ago, in August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson's home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer.

Jefferson, 63, whose Louisiana district includes New Orleans, has said little about the case publicly but has maintained his innocence. He was re-elected last year despite the looming investigation.

Jefferson's case has become best known for the nearly $100,000 in cash found in his freezer that he took from a videotaped encounter with an FBI informant.

His House office was searched by the FBI in 2006, which raised bipartisan outrage amongst Congressional leadership who called the raide unconstitutional on the grounds of the "speech and debate" clause.

but that makes no difference in my opinion. Any sleeze-bag elected politician of EITHER (or any) party who uses greed and self interest to bring harm and lower the confidence in the institution of Congress and our government needs punished.

If convicted of felonious crimes these public officials need to lose their pension, all benefits, and be incarcerated for the rest of their lives.

The damage that these individuals such as Jefferson, Cunningham, and Delay, and others do our confidence in honest government is so severe that the punishment must be commensurate so that their peers and others will think twice before ever crossing that bridge.

10. Yeah, and throw away the key...
But isn't it amazing the same media that's having an orgasm about this is the same media weighing the "fairness" of a Scooter Libby pardon or no time served at all? The same media that's willfully impotent in using a flamethrower to highlight the continued high crimes and misdemeanors of the Bush Crime Family?

RAW

11. I did wonder how much airtime this would receive...
...if the culprit had been Jefferson (R) as opposed to Jefferson (D).

They've got the whole story right there in the WaPo...who did what to whom, how many cookies they got, the store where they bought the sports equipment, and whose German Shepard dog was watching.

If he did the crime, then yeah, he needs to go, no matter what side of the aisle he's on.
I'd just like to see Equal Opportunity coverage when somebody gets caught with their hands up to the hips in the cookie jar.

12. The Democratic Party NEEDS to act quickly!
*Demand Jefferson's immediate resignation

*Act to remove ANY & ALL benefits (salary, pension, HealthCare, etc.)

This is an opportunity for the Democrats to show the country that they are different from Republicans and WILL NOT tolerate corruption among their ranks!
