My six year old son. Future liberal
I believe we, as liberals, have empathetic tendencies that develop even at a young age. I know that several of the bullies and "popular kids" in junior and high school are now raging conservatives. You can call this a generalization if you want, but this seems to be largely the case.

Back to my son - he's the middle one. Thanks goodness his two siblings are girls, so he doesn't have that "middle child" syndrome. His older sister is 11, and my youngest adopted child is 4. So, yes, he does feel like a special guy.

My wife always comments on how sweet and in touch with others Robert is. It really came to a head yesterday. In a program on the Discovery Channel, a young African American man was morbidly obese and being treated for his condition at a hospital far away from his home. His mother was also interviewed, and she commented on how her son was a "momma's boy" and what a tight knit family they had. Both she and her son talked about how they missed one another. At this point, my son started to cry and asked us to turn the channel. Robert said that "the boy isn't with his mommy." It struck my wife and I as so touching, and my wife began to cry.

I was so proud of him. I have to admit, he's the type who will always wear his heart on his sleeve, and he will be hurt. I also am concerned with bullying, but I plan to continue having contact with his school (which is wonderful) and his teachers. He is a special boy.

And I think a future liberal to boot...

2. I can't find it now, but there was a thread here recently that drew
correlations between conservatives and liberals based on childhood behavior. One of the childhood traits of a future liberal was empathy.

3. Gives me hope
I can't possibly see him as a bully or a person who enjoys or ignores other people's agony.
