Watch for a possible spike in oil prices.
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 03:39 PM by RL3AO
Super Cyclonic Storm Gonu, which is a Category 5 cyclone (what a hurricane is called in the southern Hemisphere) is tearing towards Oman, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Who knows what this might do to oil prices. Also a little fact. Gonu is the strongest tropical system ever recorded in the Arabian sea.

1. After looking up a little more info.
-Gonu is approaching the strength of Hurricane Wilma.
-It is the strongest storm ever recorded in the Arabian sea and is probably a once in a lifetime event.
-It is expected to make land fall in Oman and affect the Gulf of Oman, southern Iran, and possible into the Persian gulf has a tropical system. Now for those of you who dont know geography well, heres a map.

and one more pic of the storm.

2. Scary, Wow.
I'll fill up my gas tank later on today.

Thanks also for the beautiful photos; very dramatic visual effect.

Do they typically have cyclones in that part of the world?

3. Cyclones are very rare in the Arabian sea
Maybe one small storm every 3 or 4 years. Nothing has ever been stronger than a Cat 2...until now.

6. Thanks.
Now, I'm wondering about those US war ships, which have been sitting in the Strait of Hormuz, putting on a show for nearby Iran.

This is going to be really interesting.

Oman evacuates eastern island as powerful storm approaches

MUSCAT, Oman (AP) - Government authorities started evacuating nearly 7,000 people from an eastern Omani island Monday in response to a powerful cyclone headed toward the country, said a senior government official...(cut to interesting line)

Oil prices edged upward Monday as the storm headed toward the oil-rich Persian Gulf area, but Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, doubted the increases could really be attributed to Gonu.

«I don't know if you can really attribute any of the gain to the cyclone,» he said. «It's an excuse, as opposed to a reason, for the rise in prices.»

To reassure both its people and the oil markets, Saudi Arabia's government issued a statement Monday saying the cyclone would have no «direct effect on the central and eastern parts of the kingdom.

7. Sounds like Brazil
After Cyclone Catarina formed off the coast of Brazil in 2004, it took the Gov't a year to admit that is was tropical. They didnt want to admit it because they never have had to deal with them.

5. Possible? Bwahahahahahaha....
Oh you, you crack me up.

count on it.

It doesn't make a whole big difference how the price will spike, go up or "surge", just count on it going up.

I don't need a hurricane to tell me that. LOL
