Bernstein: Gore Wants In
But he feels he needs a clear shot to do so. This just said on the Charley Rose Show.

We're not exactly jumping for joy over the current field of candidates, and the Rethugs are simply dead in the water. The job's his if he wants it.

3. Yeah, really!
Who the fuck do the Republicans have?

Fred Thompson? No.

Tom Tancredo? Hell no.

John McCain? Too much of a war mongerer.

Guiliani? As was said on the cover of Rolling Stone this week: "Worse than Bush".

Three words: Gore for pres.

14. Is this the royal "we" because I read a lot of people here who are excited about
Obama, Edwards, Clinton, and even Kucinich. It's hard to imagine that Gore, who has been very careful about comments about his running, would in any way confiding to anybody that he was.

18. No, it's a collective "we"
Sort of averaging all the vibes around here. Everyone has their supporters, but nobody really seems to be setting the field on fire. Gore seems to be most people's first or second choice.

Of course, this is just MHO. I'd be interested in seeing some real polling on it.

28. Maybe it's the 800 pound gorilla in the room who says he is not a candidate,
but so many either do not believe him or thinks he can be convinced that causes the lack of excitement by some for other people running. We'll just have to wait until Gore says he is not running and has no plans to run. Oops! He has already done that.

83. To which I can answer that I distinctly heard Al Gore tell Gwen Ifel on PBS
that he was not a candidate and had no plans to be a candidate. The one thing that clearly says is that he is not a candidate. To find anything else you need to read something into that, which lots of people do.

7. Run Al Run! But. please,...
... don't triangulate.

Gore was real cheese turned into Velveeta by his handlers. I don't agree with Gore on a number of issues (increasing the military budget, for one. NAFTA for another). But like Howard Dean, with whom I also had some disagreements, I am willing to respectfully disagree and wholeheartedly support. Gore was and continues to be right on Iraq. And, of course, he's right on global warming.

The Presidency is yours, Al. After all, you already earned it.

32. Check this out.
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/politics/washingtonwhispers/070603/john_kerry_the_new_comeback_ki.htm

John Kerry, the New Comeback Kid

<snip>
Party strategist Chris Lehane thinks Kerry's comeback is akin to Al Gore's. "The last two nominees have created their own platforms to affect the type of change that they believe in," he says. Former Gore aide Donna Brazile sees a larger story at work: "I am willing to bet that some voters may like to see Kerry reappear on the national stage."
<snip>

You thinkin' what I'm thinkin'? Edwards as AG. Yep. That'll work for me.

BTW- Brazille better stay the hell out of it. She's "working it" for position and she isn't going to get it. The further away the better.:bounce:

11. I keep hoping he will
We truly need a strong and WISE leader. I don't dislike the other candidates, but none of them instills in me a feeling that they can truly fix the problems we have right now. If not for the precarious position our country is in right ow I would probably have no doubts in voting for some of the current candidates. But we are in a very bad place and we need someone with the extreme intelligence and wisdom of this man.

People often say he is "too smart" and it makes people feel ignorant. Well I WANT this next president to be extremely intelligent and wise. I don't care if talks in monotone or uses "big words". This country needs true leadership, not fancy slogans. Fancy slogans don't mean a damn thing if you can't produce results. This country needs someone who can bring this country back to being a home we can be proud of.

1% is most likely within the margin of error. Also, I remember 04 when Dean jumped way out front in the beginning. Trying to predict the race is nothing more than reading tea leaves this far out. I will qualify my comments with the fact I've given to the draft Gore movement. I've also contributed to DK and Richardson (but since one is a long shot and the other hasn't taken off yet, I need to feel someone who knows the score and tells it needs to be in office and Gore fits that).

He is getting tons of publicity with his book and movie. Everybody is speculating, but the elusive one is the one that everybody wants. This whole presidential race started way too early. Let the others fight between themselves, and then he can come in as a fresh face.

Until/unless he is on the nets and on the evening news announcing HIMSELF that he IS RUNNING, people ought to stop flapping their jaws and their wings chicken-little style saying he is. What is the POINT in that? It's just idiotic speculation.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Gore, if he runs I'll support him but all this speculation is just that - lots O' hot air for nothing.

70. It is indeed appalling
there is absolutely no need for any more than a six week campaign.

It's a big money-maker for many involved, our hideous media first and foremost, but the lengthy campaigns really offer the ability for jockeying, manipulation and game playing that is truly sick.

One thing Biden said at the recent debate about publicly financed campaigns was marvelous.

94. That does NOT spell:
"I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States in 2008"

To assume it means that or even remotely means that is pure speculation. I have not "closed the door" on a lot of things in my own life either. Doesn't mean they're gonna happen. Nowhere NEAR it.

98. And if Gore is not running
he is free to SAY SO at any time.

He knows how much people want him to run.

He could have said, "No. Absolutely not," and that would be that.

I swear, all of you who say things like what you did in your post sometimes come across as, for some reason, wanting Gore to stay out of the race.

One wonders why one might get that impression...

54. I like Al and he would be my first choice if he ran but (yeah there's always a but)
if he is so hesitant because he needs a "clear shot" in terms of no competition, he loses major points in my book.

you know, **** or get off the pot already.

58. I hope he announces just after Labor Day.
Let the "wave" build over the summer. I like the sound of a Gore/Obama 2008 ticket.

61. Gore - with a "G": as in G-r-a-v-i-t-a-s
Gore's got it in spades. None of the other Dem candidates do. None of 'em. Sorry, Obama. Sorry, Sen. Clinton. Even Edwards (whom I like a lot) doesn't have it. Kooch? Hardly. Gravel? Get real. Gore's got gravitas coupled with the wisdom of experience in so many different areas that it's no contest. He's the real deal.

I think he's waiting for the Nobel Prize before announcing. I'm looking for - and hoping for - an announcement of his candidacy this fall.

There are no more clear shots.

Now, how does Carl know this? Is he just surmising, or does he know something we don't?

86. He needs to address TRADE and the job market
He insulted Ross Perot on NAFTA. Like John Edwards, he needs to say, "I was wrong."

Or else I will not support him and I don't care how much of a rock star he's become. Politics, for many, is a way of redressing social grievances, not an American Idol contest.

you wouldn't vote for him? BTW, welcome to DU.
