Glenn Beck speculated that Kucinich's wife must be under influence of "date rape drug"
Beck speculated that Kucinich's wife must be under influence of "date rape drug"
On the May 4 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Glenn Beck said of Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and his wife, Elizabeth Harper Kucinich: "How did that happen? ... You think it's dope?" Beck went on to speculate whether she was under the influence of "some sort of ... date rape drug." Beck described the drug he had in mind as "not powerful enough to actually knock you out, but it's powerful enough to, like, make you think that you're not standing next to Dennis Kucinich and making out with him." Beck continued: "I was thinking cyanide. That would be the only thing that would really dull the senses enough. Even then, your dead body would be like, 'Dennis Kucinich has his tongue in my mouth.' " Additionally, Beck compared Kucinich to Gollum, a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Beck said: "You take his shirt off and put him in a loincloth, and he's Gollum."

As Media Matters for America has noted, ABC News recently hired Beck as a "regular commentator" on Good Morning America. He also hosts a talk show on CNN Headline News. Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates Beck's radio show, says the program is heard on more than 230 radio stations nationwide. According to Talkers Magazine, the program reaches more than 3 million listeners each week.

From the June 4 edition of Premiere Radio Networks' The Glenn Beck Program, with executive producer and head writer Steve Burguiere, who is known on-air as "Stu," and producer Dan Andros:

2. oh, and I suppose you would know all about that kind of thing, Glenn!
His smarmy, mean-spirited comments are almost as annoying as his "I was just kidding" air. One of these days, he's going to get too cocky and blurt out something that people are going to hold him to. A female CNN anchor almost got him last week -- only she backed off instead of emphasizing his poor logic and cruel sense of "humor". And he sat there, just revelling in how he can get away with this kind of thing.

7. Do you have a link to a vid or transcript?
I'm wondering how the anchor almost "got him".

What a putz he is.

They had him on for a "teaser" segment before his own show. He decided he wanted to comment on the news story about a U of Nebraska sociology student who did her undergrad thesis on sex trade workers, exotic dancers specifically. I taped the segment because I'm teaching a social science research methods course, and the date-gathering technique she used (getting a temporary job at a strip club so she could see what the female dancers experience, and gain their trust so they would talk to her) is widely used by researchers. When I played the video in class, the students were appalled -- Beck was making puerile jokes all the way through, and when the (female) commentator tried to steer the conversation back to the study's conclusions, he made fun of her for not joining in with the mockery. The class picked out several logical inconsistencies: Beck conflating exotic dancers with prostitutes; asserting that it was no more useful for researchers to use participant-observation than it was for oncologists to have cancer themselves; and simultaneously deriding any research on the sex industry while at the same time coming up with dubious assertions about the mental illness rates in sex trade workers (how is anyone going to get data like that without actually doing a study of some sort?).

Beck was smart enough to realize that continuing to pick on the student researcher would make his bullying evident, so he switched to her prof instead ... but not before uttering some demeaning comments about his own wife (implying that she might be unhinged enough to "find her calling" as an addiction therapist just so she could get drunk -- using the dubious logic he'd employed earlier). And then pouring scorn on the CNN commentator (I don't watch the weekend shows enough to know her name), when she ventured to suggest that the student had at least gotten some valuable research experience. He ridiculed her so much that she sat there meekly with a smile plastered on her face, not even attempting to question his reasoning.

I've dealt with people before, who use similar techniques (ad hominem attacks, or suddenly turning around and claiming that it's only a joke, so why be so concerned?) as soon as they sense they're in a precarious position -- they have too high an opinion of themselves to ever admit they're wrong (at least not when it counts, in front of witnesses). I rather feel sorry for Beck's co-workers.

3. Beck is probably wondering where he could find some of that drug...
that way he could get a date that he didn't have to pay. What a pig.

5. He's just jealous
Glenn Beck is a racist, sexist scumbucket. No sane woman would ever want to screw him - let alone a woman as good looking as Elizabeth Kucinich!

8. Kucinich really riles such azz holes.
His efforts to apply fairness to the media really threatens scum like Beck . Maybe a Kucinich Administration would re-create another Newton Minnow FCC as we had under LBJ.? When applying Newton Minnow's comments to compare the media to a 'wasteland.' Well can you imagine Newton Minnow's feeling to today's media theme park wasteland. The likes of Beck might have to go back to being in the sanitation crew where his talents lie.

I thought we saw the last of him that time he openly sexually harassed some woman on air. She looked so uncomfortable-it was disgusting.

13. Personally, I find high IQ and progressive sentiments to be a distinct turn-on...
Although Dennis isn't my candidate, I just had to say that.

Glenn Beck needs to get his mind out of the gutter and his voice off the airwaves. Ew.

With his sagging ratings -- and rumors of impending cancellation in NY media/broadcasting circles -- I'd not be surprised.

18. Madame Kurovska can see glimmers of other reasons why Mr. Beck
seeks harbor in the soothing illusion afforded by mind and mood-altering substances.

But it's just a blip on her radar, not as clearly seen as a rainbow's swath across the sky when the sun comes out.

If more, it's not too much more.
