We met Al Gore tonight in Seattle
Ladies and gentlemen, I shook the hand of the man I remain convinced is the president of the United States a couple of hours ago.

Al Gore appeared at Seattle's Town Hall this evening for a book signing. There was a $5 charge to get in the door; the tickets sold out last Friday in three minutes. Yes, that is not a misprint. Twenty-five hundred people packed the hall, and there were a couple of hundred in front of the building, either hoping for a ticket, demonstrating or passing out literature.

Mr. Gore looks good. He's still gray. I think he's losing weight. (Please, God, let it be exactly what he said -- if he's running, he'll go on a diet.) He spoke for almost an hour, pacing back and forth. He was charming, self-deprecating, funny, but most of all, he told the truth. Most of the time, his voice was quiet, and the hall was quiet enough to hear a pin drop. It almost seemed like he was musing to himself on how things are, instead of how they should be. I tried to take notes. To say that it was an education (and I wished for a tape recorder,) is an understatement. I can only post quotes, because I could not have possibly been able to get the meat unless I was liveblogging.

"What do the climate crisis and the invasion of Iraq have in common?" he asked. Despite facts and evidence, we pushed forward.

"Is the truth irrelevant? How do we connect the dots of policy and truth?"

"When reason is assigned a lower priority, it leaves a vacuum, which is filled by partisanship."

One of the concepts he expounded on at great length was "Information ecology". He joked that the definition was "above his pay grade," but he spent quite some time talking about how information is disseminated to all of us. It started with Socrates and Plato, and it goes on today. He says that "information ecology" is also made up of low barriers for individuals -- if you can read, if you can write, you can enter the forum and contribute. He used the term "meritocracy of ideas". A little later, he began to speak about wealth and power. He says they've combined through history -- this is not a new thing. The needs of the few rule the many. Is this right? How can it change?

Al Gore says that in Nazi Germany, all questions of fact became questions of power. He also stated that the movie "Network", instead of being farce, has now become prophecy. He quoted Abraham Lincoln talking about "thrall", then stated that the definition of "thrall" is mental imprisonment by shared illusions.

As he walked the stage, one of the more chilling moments of his comments was his quietly reciting some of the things that have happened since the Bush administration has been in office. "Who would have known that a Presidential candidate would openly endorse torture, and that the next candidate didn't think he went far enough, so he endorsed not only torture, but the removal of basic human and civil rights as well? Who would have imagined that an audience would cheer that? Who would ever have dreamed that the government would believe it necessary to listen in on the phone calls and communications of innocent citizens of our country?"

He had stinging words for the media. What's more important -- getting out the truth about why we are in Iraq, or "what were the contents of Anna Nicole Smith's stomach during her autopsy?" Yes, that is a direct quote. He highlighted the fact that 44 million American citizens are without health insurance, but we have heard endlessly that the abolishment of the "death tax," which would benefit 1, 100,000th of that number, is a much more important issue. He says that "entertainment" television is "crowding out the space we need to govern ourselves". "Ideas now matter less than money."

The one time he raised his voice in almost an hour's speech? He told us that the freedom of the Internet is just as crucial as the freedom of our nation. It is the last frontier where there is a free exchange of ideas. We must keep it available, and we must keep it free.

He's not dazzling. He's not Sound Bite Guy. He's not the things our media have told us are important. At the same time, I was in the presence of greatness tonight. To listen to him, one must be quiet. He's not yelling. There's no light show and certainly not a t-shirt concession. It's just a guy who's using brilliance, logic and science to save our climate so his kids and grandkids can have a country to fix once it's all over. We waited in line so that he could sign the copies of his book we have; I extended my hand across the table and said, "Hi, Mr. Vice President." He shook my hand and I said, "There are so many things I want to say to you, but there are a ton of people in line, so I will write you a letter." He looked me in the eyes and said, "I hope you will." I'll be writing that letter.

1. Al Gore is a good man

How awesome that you got to meet him. Congratulations.

I don't know if he's going to run for President or not. I fear that he won't.

But I sure hope he does.

8. It's the best thing about him
He was just a guy in a suit and tie, musing about what's going on. He was trying to get people to understand that our very society needs to change, or it will cease to exist as we know it. He has faith that we can start a national dialogue again, that people should come first, that we deserve more from our country and from its leaders.

I want him to run more than I've ever wanted anything in my life. At the same time, how can I possibly ask a man who went through the clusterf*ck known as the 2000 election to do it again?

14. OR, I know
I know you are right. At the same time, will his message change? Will he get worked over by the image consultants and media buyers and on and on and on, till his message gets diluted and he isn't the same person again?

He's his own man now. I can't imagine going into that white-hot spotlight one more time, knowing every word, the way I look, my family, on and on and on, is scrutinized 24x7. I can't imagine throwing him to the Wurlitzer that is the RNC.

The only way it's going to work is if he is absolutely himself. Take it or leave it. He is the last best hope to save our country and the world, IMHO, YMMV.

18. I'd tend to doubt it
But then, I also tend to over-estimate people.

I'll say this, though — his "people" would be bloody fools to try to change his image. His ecological campaign has won him many allies and admirers; only the terminally deluded still say global warming is a myth. Hell, even W got on board with it a couple of days ago.

It isn't just about climate change, either. In championing that cause, Gore has shown himself to be a man of deep conviction about our planet. People now sense that he's someone who will truly work for change, and not just with the polar ice caps.

You said it yourself — he isn't about the T-shirts or bumper stickers or theme songs (WTG, Hillary). He's about leading, and I think a great many people now realize that.

Remember, too — he's also a veteran of one of the roughest presidential campaigns in U.S. history. Plus, he knows how the media works. (They all do, but I think he knows better than the rest.)

I'm with you on at least one thing, though: If he truly doesn't want to run, no one should try to coerce him. It's his life, and his family's.

19. I would work my fingers to the bone for him
Seriously. I would.

If not for us, for our nieces and nephews. Our friends' kids. I want them to have clean water to drink, safe food, to not live in fear that they'll someday be called up for the War Without End. I want them to have a President that does not need to have the big words sounded out for him.

I want them to have a leader that puts truth and substance before sound bites and theme songs.

21. I wonder...
If Gore did run, and he didn't feed the sound-bite machine, would he drop off the media radar as a result? Would he be forced to play their game?

Is is possible to run a campaign anymore or hold public office without speaking in increments of five to 10 seconds?

I wonder this as well. Frankly, I'm pessimistic. If the media can do nothing but breathlessly report on whether or not Hillary Clinton is still having sex with her husband, or John Edwards' "$400 haircut", I'm despairing.

We get the leadership we deserve.

41. I am so torn on this.
I know too. I want him to contribute his exceptional intellect and reasoning to aid our country in the depths of despair, but I can’t wish this WH on a man I admire so much.

The repugs have so many dirty tricks up their sleeves, bushco is going to leave the biggest mess in history to his successor, Gore could no doubt do a great job, but at what price? Happiness?

There are other D candidates who can win in a fair election, and can start to rebuild our nation. Gore deserves better.

Look forward to reading your letter! You are going to post it, right?

to help share the load. A super VP to work with. Or, he could endorse someone for president that he believes in and who would give him a position of authority to continue his super-critical work, plus the clout to make things happen.

72. The last time he endorsed someone, all hell broke loose
The Washingtonian Dems decided they needed to get SERIOUS about stopping Howard Dean and promptly did so -- almost all of them ganaged up against him and got busy with some dirty tricks that helped sink his campaign. For that reason a Gore endorsement might be the kiss of death since we have so many Washingtonian Dems running again.

25. Gore is keeping his options open
Al Gore is the best person for the job, in terms of his experience, knowledge, intelligence and judgement.

I am dreaming of a Gore-Obama ticket in 2008. But there is no hurry for Gore to enter the race.

I think Al Gore is keeping his options open right now, watching how the "pre-season" goes. I don't think he yet knows what he will do. My guess is that the chance of him entering the race is somewhere around 35%.

Gore's current line - "I have no plans to be a candidate" - tells us that right now (today) he has no plans to run. But it doesn't prevent him from changing his plans and making new plans during the coming months.

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision (or if you prefer - "change his mind") sometime in the fall.

It all depends on the circumstances. In September, if the race for the Dem nomination is still wide open and Hillary's campaign is in trouble, it might create the conditions for Gore to enter the race.

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

One of Al Gore's recent half-hour speeches can be seen at http://www.politicsTV.com

35. kineta, it is my every hope
>Can you imagine having someone who 'gets it' like he does as president?<

I believe that he is the only person at this point equipped for the job.

Whomever takes office after Bush and his cronies are through trashing the place will need to have a skill set like no other. He or she will need to have a spine of steel, the stomach to make unpopular decisions and follow them through (wait till whomever comes in gets a look at the books, for instance,) the heart to know how we must proceed. He or she will have to take immediate steps to ameliorate climate change.

He or she will have to pour their very soul into that office.

I think that man is Al Gore. I really do. I just don't see it in the crop of candidates we currently have.

I cannot believe that I missed out on this event--I don't recall reading or hearing about his coming here until a few days after tickets had gone on sale (and subsequently sold out as a Beatles reunion would've). I shall remain pissed at myself for at least another week.

On another note, I believe that the 2000 fiasco ultimately made Gore a stronger and better person, and that it would better equip him to run in 2008 should he choose to do so. He should only choose to run if his heart is completely into it, however.

Here's hoping for a Gore-Obama/Richardson/Etc. ticket come next year.

56. Yes thanks I wanted to come and it was sold out
I am also reading his book and had no idea it was Abraham Lincoln that opened the doors to corporations getting in power and that he worried for our country because of it.

I live 3 hrs on the east side and had lunch in Wenatchee WA today and a girl asked me about the book i was reading and said she loved Al & Tipper. I was thrilled because that town is like 95% red.

58. Congratulations on managing to meet and hear
Al Gore in person. I saw him last Tuesday at GW. Television does not do the man justice.

I think there is one salient reason why he might consider running: he has to live here too. I don't think he wants the future generations of Gores to be exposed further to the Republicans running the country, the economy and the environment. He has a vested interest in saving our Democracy, just as we do.

Today's polls show him at 17%, coming in third among the Dems. I think that is amazing since he has not announced he's running.

Thanks for taking the time to report on your evening. It's a wonderful report.

59. You can tell your grandchildren
That you met Al Gore. That you heard him speak. That you were in that room.

I wish I could.

I feel jealous. And yet, I feel relieved that people appreciate him the way you do. The way I do.

Please, write that letter. And let us know what you said.

Thanks.

K&R.

I so empathize with this feeling! It's like a gathering STORM of RELIEF at the reception Gore is receiving! I can almost feel the average IQ of the country inch upward every time he speaks.

65. It really gives me hope
Hope that America has not gone truly mad.

Hope that a sane voice can not only make a difference, but can change a whole PATTERN of mistaken thinking.

But, on the other hand, I have expressed regret that Al Gore will seek the presidency.

Because, I fear, he will be burdened down with the petty politics of running a presidency where he will be criticized at every turn. Every quote. Every action he takes.

I fear he'll be a loss for the international community at large, where he has the most chance of making a real difference as a leader for the world.

But I won't denigrate him for this.

I wish him well in whatever he decides.

66. I think he's strong enough to continue his arguments in the same way he has been.
I just have a feeling if he chooses to run, he will use his candidacy to keep hammering his ideas home and laugh off whatever criticism he recieves for saying what he really thinks.

That is certainly my hope and trust, because that is not only how to make a difference, but how to make a difference and WIN!

68. I'm glad Gore has been able to keep politics at arms length for a while.
I saw a much less grounded Gore at a speech with in Clinton back in 1996, and it was sad to see a person that was so intelligent try to fit into the formula of what a successful speaker should be - bombastic and trying desperately to give the standard rousing political speech. It came off sounding like a bad caricature of a Baptist preacher. Clinton lightened up the mood by giving him some friendly ribbing about it in his speech that followed.

It's good to hear that he's gotten past all of that. He's too real and too intelligent to be a politician anymore. The question is whether the game of politics is too compromised for the likes of him.

I said this back in 2003 when there was talk of him running for President again and I still believe it now - just the fact that he's even considering getting back into the cesspool of American politics right now makes him a great man. If he does, he's going to need all of the support he can get, and he won't find it in the DLC-run Democratic Party right now, any more than when he was hung out to dry by the Party during Election 2000.

If he does try a second run at the Presidency, he should fund it entirely through direct Internet funding and run as an Independent. That would be an entirely appropriate message to send to *both* parties right now.

69. He said last night that he was still a "recovering politician"
on step #9....

>He's too real and too intelligent to be a politician anymore.<

He is, and that is his strength. The question is, though -- will America accept him as he is, or will they vote for another blow-dried, perfectly managed, prepped, made over by consultants and pollsters candidate that appeals to those who don't think?

I'm still just so thrilled, and I'm even happier to have been able to bring the details to everyone else.

Julie

71. As plain and straightforward as he may be on a podium
When you get him one-on-one, he loosens up, and is funny,
extremely aware, and just a pleasure to talk to. I met him
when he was still VP, but we got to chat for a good 20 minutes.
Granted, when Bill Clinton later walked in, his start quality
stole the limelight, but AL Gore still impresses greatly if
you can get him alone. That's the reason I think he was so
amazingly effective as Clinton's unoffical roving ambassador
to the world. Al Gore impressed everybody from NATO heads of
state to the Sheikhs of the Arab states. That is why not only
the majority of the US electorate was hoping for a Gore win in
2000, but the rest of the world as well. They were all hoping for
a partner in Washington that they knew, and one they knew they could
work with.

He even impressed my wife, and she is a very hard sell, only
losing her grip when it came to me (lucky slip).

Gore is having the time of his life right now. Imagine what the past few years have done for his ego, and what it has done for his happiness factor.... I think when a person is really, really happy they make the best decisions. How wonderful it must have been with our duly elected! Al- WE LOOOOOVE YOU!!!!!! Please help us out of this mess. If you run- you will WIN!!!
