Poll question: How electable will Hillary be in the general?
Edited on Tue Jun-05-07 03:50 PM by Dawgs
Facts:
Hillary gets support from lifelong Democrats. Edwards and Obama do well with Independants.
Hillary's strong disapprovals are high. Edwards and Obama's are much lower.
Hillary has done very well in the debates.
Most Republicans can't stand her.

What are her chances?

4. Voted "other." But...If she's our nominee, I think she'll win.
Edited on Tue Jun-05-07 03:46 PM by bunkerbuster1
She's not my first (or second) choice, but if she runs, I'll vote for her and I believe she will win.

Here's the thing about the stuff the right wing will throw at her--they've been doing it for years. And the result is, most people are revolted by it.

The smearing, the typical "let's make fun of her looks/weight/voice/laugh" may play well to the retarded base, but most people think it's gross. Women, especially, think it's gross. It'll backfire; it always does.

I saw this when she ran for Senate, and I think we'll see this if she's our nominee.

I don't like her.. I will not send her money.. I will not waste any time on her campaign. The only person now that could get me involved is Gore.

22. Eight years in political polling...
and we did some stuff that covered her races in NYS.

And she has a shadow vote, i.e. she gets a higher percentage of votes than polling points.

So, no, it's not just a guess.

11. Too much baggage
Nothing will motivate Republican donors as well as the nomination of HRC.

Nothing will help the GOTV for the Republicans like the nomination of HRC.

Nothing will motivate the base of the Republicans like the nomination of HRC.

And nothing will split the Democratic party like the nomination of HRC.

We have plenty of good candidates who don't carry that much baggage. I hope we can stop HRC before she brings about another Dem. Disaster.

And that's my opinion.

14. Hillary is not my first choice but..
if she did run I think she would have a decent chance no matter who was the puke nominee. I have a strong feeling its going to be a Clinton/Obama v. Guiliani/McCain ticket so I dont know though, that little fuck McCain might not want to be VP then it would probably be some one we havent heard of, another PNAC signer probably. If the pukes win again.........well I dont know but get ready to go to the soup kitchen for our weekly meals and start cooking your pets.

17. A lot of Democrats can't stand her either. But, even she should be "electable".
Given what BushCo has "accomplished", so far, a dead slug with a (D) after it's name should be able to beat any Republican for the presidency.

But, she will certainly challenge the nose-holding capabilities of many of us.

23. About as electable as the other Dems.
I think she has a good shot of winning in the GE if she's our nominee.
I think if she does become the nominee, that most Dems will vote for her....I will because I won't vote for the repuke.

Now if only Gore would enter the race..........

32. Not very electable.
I don't think a Clinton nomination will energize and excite enough voters to show up at the polls. IMHO, people do not want to see another Clinton or Bush in the WH for quite some time. The prospect of Clinton getting elected will mean two families in power for far too long.

35. Two Years Ago,
I thought that Clinton might be unelectable.

Now, seeing her stack up against possible Republican opponents, I no longer think so. And comparing her with the other Democratic candidates, all the others have drawbacks too. She might even be the most electable of the announced candidates. Still not my first choice, but she's handled things well so far.

39. To the people voting "1"
What a disappointing thing to say. Hillary is not my first choice, but I would be happy and proud to support her, and she is better by far than anyone the GOP could put up, including that obnoxious, bulldog-faced actor.

Her disapprovals among liberals are high for good reason. She voted for the IWR and her health-care plan was a disappointment for those of us who wanted a single-payer, non-corporate plan.

But her disapprovals among the general populace, centrists and right-leaning people are based on urban legends, like that she is "shrill", a "feminazi", etc. etc. The more familiar people get with her, the more they will realize that those memes are mostly false, and I believe they will drop.

Again, she's not my top choice, but she's extremely competent and capable, enough to get this anti-war dem to vote for her in the general election, anyway.

I don't think she deserves to be slammed to this degree. You people actually think any GOPer who's not an ax murderer could beat her? Come on. Get real.

40. I voted number 4, but it doesn't quite express my thoughts
So I will express them here.

Hillary Clinton, if she is the nominee will be elected President for the same reason Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980: any Democrat will win in 2008, just as any Republican would have beaten Jimmy Carter in 1980.

In fact, Reagan, who beat Carter by 10% with John Anderson taking about 6% of the vote, was probably the least electable candidate the Republicans could have put forward. Carter was not cutting the mustard as president and, with the exceptions of Reagan and John Connally, I was prepared to vote a Republican that year. I voted in the morning, held my nose, and voted for Carter. Had I voted in the afternoon, after the returns from the East Coast were in, I would have voted for Anderson.

I don't like Hillary Clinton. Every time I see her, she reminds me what I didn't like about Bill, not what I liked about him. Every time I hear her, she sounds like her speech was cobbled together by committee (which is essentially what a focus group is). There must be a person there, with her own independent thoughts, a person too intelligent to blame the Iraqi people for the US failure in Iraq, but that shrinkwrap in which Terry McAuliffe has packaged her is just too thick to find that person.

If there is a person under that shrinkwrap, I hope she comes out before November 2008. Otherwise, I be holding my nose in the voting booth yet again, and the smell is getting awfully bad.
