watch this. Just...watch it. trust me.
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/104

Architect and designer William McDonough asks what our buildings and products would look like if designers took into account "All children, all species, for all time." A tireless proponent of absolute sustainability (with a deadpan sense of humor), he explains his philosophy of "cradle to cradle" design, which bridge the needs of ecology and economics. He also shares some of his most inspiring work, including the world's largest green roof (at the Ford plant in Dearborn, Michigan), and the entire sustainable cities he's designing in China.

1. That was fantastic, tbanks for posting.

Stuff like that actually depresses me, because the technology and ability are here, but so few places will embrace it in this country.

5. Very interesting. I've bookmarked to hear again tomorrow
when I'm more awake. I'm more optimistic after listening to this but I wish he would start in some major U.S. cities as well. I can see the need here as much as in China! Thanks so much for an introduction to this visionary.

7. This is one of the few
things I have seen which give me hope. I wish instead of the new subdivisions I see springing up here every day were communities instead designed by this man.

10. Wow.
I'm in love.

I'd read about the Ford plant and the Gap building on www.treehugger.com, but didn't connect them.

The Chinese project is just breathtaking!

We need to share this and spread the ideas. We need to see much, much more development like this that can restore HOPE for a real future.

thought on ecology and post-scarcity anarchism.

Notice the deep disagreements in principle this guy would have with the Al Gore version of environmentalism.

16. Bookchin! wow....enter the wayback machine. thanks for the reminder.
friends of mine at Purdue, of all places, were deeply influenced by him as they tried to get a campus movement going centered around 'environmental anarchsim,' ca. the first Earth Day

going to send the original link to one of them. can't wait to see what he has to say. pretty sure that name hasn't entered his thoughts for quite some time

18. Bookchin should be read again everywhere
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 03:13 PM by alcibiades_mystery
Not only was his thought on ecology prescient, he also had a significant analysis of post-Fordist labor organization long before the same was developed (primarily) by the Autonomia movement in Italy. Reading Bookchin today is like reading a visionary. Bookchin was pretty much right about so much. He was also wrong about quite a bit, but who can be blamed for that?

Here's a primer:
